| Photo by Larry Wong |
| This from Larry Wong: "Self portrait on the roof of the Hilton Colon Hotel in Quito, Ecuador, with a cloud of volcanic ash descending upon the capital city. I was sent down to Ecuador from Edmonton, Canada to cover a story about some oil company workers who had been kidnapped and held for ransom in the jungles near the Ecuador/Columbia border. After a week, my newspaper (The Edmonton Journal) decided to recall me back home. Unfortunately, the day before I was to leave, a volcano near Quito erupted, raining volcanic ash over the city and forcing the closure of the airport for a week. Gee... another week in the tropics of South America! What bad luck!" |
