Interns at the Star Tribune are actually full-time summer staffers with full responsibility and ability to complete any task as our staff photographers. We don’t relegate them to lab work, or bad assignments. They are encouraged to cultivate their own stories as well as working with our talented crew of reporters.

We look for college or graduate students who show promise as photojournalists. The most important factor is the quality of their portfolio, but a well-crafted cover letter explaining why they want to pursue a career in photojournalism and why they want to work for the Star Tribune is key. Similarly, their recommendations will help us get a better sense of their resourcefulness, their work ethic and their ability to take constructive feedback.

We have a separate multimedia internship, but our photo intern will certainly be given opportunities to shoot video, produce audio slide shows, and do other work for

The most successful applicants have completed their junior year in college and have done an internship at a smaller paper. Interns are paid the same as a first-year professional, which is currently over $700 a week.

Like all other newspapers, the past couple years have been tough. Although we have lost a few very talented photojournalists, we have maintained a staff of 17 still shooters, many who also shoot some video. In 2010 we will be completing a major redesign of our web site and hope to showcase the very talented staff here in Minneapolis.

Unfortunately our deadline for the summer 2010 was December 1st, 2009.

Internship applications should be sent to:
