THE coolest sports photography event of the year returns next spring featuring a full schedule of local events for participants to cover including NCAA Division I sports.

Sports Shooter Academy VII is a hand-on, shooting workshop that gives attendees a chance to experience and cover real sports events under the guidance of an award-winning faculty of photojournalists.

The workshop will be four full days in Orange County, CA beginning at 9 am Wednesday April 7 and running through midnight Saturday April 10.

In addition to college baseball, softball, track & field, men's indoor volleyball and tennis, the SSA VI schedule includes sessions at the La Habra Boxing Club, Santa Anita Race Track and with professional beach volleyball players. Class topics include shooting portraits on location, getting the most out of speedlights and remotes.

One-on-one editing and critique sessions with the faculty will follow each of the three shooting days.

The mantra of the Sports Shooter Academy is See Better, Shoot Better and the goal of this educational program is to help participants work on developing a strategy to cover sports, improve their vision in what makes a great photograph versus a standard one and develop new techniques. The workshop faculty will be out in the field at events with the participants, offering advice, giving spot critiques and providing inspiration.

For details on the application process and a cool documentary made during the last Sports Shooter Academy, go to these links at the new SSA website:

Sports Shooter Academy VII is sponsored by Nikon. Through special funding through Nikon, students accepted into this workshop will be able to attend TUITION - FREE!

Working photographers can also attend by filling out the application form linked above. The tuition for non-students is: $600 for members; $650 for members.

Think Tank Photo and Samy's Camera are also supporting Sports Shooter Academy VII.

Space is very limited for this workshop and once it is filled a waiting list will be started. Any openings due to dropouts will be filled from the waiting list.

In addition to providing funding for students to attend tuition-free, Nikon will have their latest professional digital cameras, lenses and speedlights on site for participants to checkout to use during the workshop. Lenses on hand will range from fisheyes to super-telephotos like 600mm. At SSA VI, Nikon had the most gear I have ever seen at an event except for an Olympic Games.
