For those of you who have been waiting for a 'Golden Invitation' to participate in the SportsShooter.com monthly clip contest: here it is.

SportsShooter.com is proud to announce that Canon USA, Inc. is now the official sponsor of the Monthly Clip Contest.

Canon USA, Inc. and SportsShooter.com will present the 'SportsShooter.com Photographer of the Year' with a Canon EOS 1D Digital SLR along with a Canon EF 28-135 image stabilized zoom lens.

The SportsShooter.com Photographer of the Year is the photographer who has accumulated the most points in the contest over the course of the year. With three months worth of results, the current leader is Robert Seale of The Sporting News (60 points), followed closely by Keith Birmingham of the Pasadena Star-News and Matthias Hangst of Pressefoto Baumann in Ludwigsburg, Germany (each with 50 points).

In addition, Canon will also be awarding a monthly prize to the winner of "The Shooter's Choice Award." This award goes to the photographer whose image received the most votes in each given month, and is the most prestigious monthly award worthy of the most points.

The "Shooter's Choice" winner can come from any of the four contest categories (Sports Action, Sports Feature, News, and Feature.) Each "Shooter's Choice" award winner will receive a Canon Shooter's Accessory Pack that includes a Canon professional camera bag, thermal coffee mug, EOS Digital ball cap, waterproof flashlight, CF card wallet, and other goodies.

And there's good news for our past "Shooter's Choice" winners, too. This award is retroactive! Tim Tadder (January 2003), Will Lester (February 2003) and David Eulitt (March 2003) will be receiving the Canon Shooters Accessory Pack.

The Monthly Clip Contest made it's debut in January of 2003 and has quickly become the most popular part of the SportsShooter.com website.

"SportsShooter.com members are a very active group of highly accomplished photographers," said David R. Metz, Director of Professional Products, Consumer Imaging Group for Canon USA, Inc.

"Canon is very pleased to come on board as a sponsor of the SportsShooter.com monthly clip contest," Metz said. "The concept of an on-line competition that is peer judged by the participants is very refreshing. It's a great use of Internet technology."

"This contest format is certain to produce some really high quality photography," he said. "We are honored that the most popular monthly photos, as judged by the member photographers, will now become the Canon sponsored "Shooter's Choice Award" and that the annual "SportsShooter.com Photographer of the Year" will receive the high performance EOS 1D digital SLR camera as their award."

Metz also added, "I am impressed that the "SportsShooter.com" member photographers represent some of the very best in day-to-day photojournalism. Working routine daily assignments in sports, hard news, and features gives everyday working press photographers the opportunity to make great images. And the SportsShooter.com competition gives those photographers recognition outside of their immediate home markets. Its a good thing for the photojournalism community."

"We think that the SportsShooter.com website is going to become a great vehicle for the promotion of great photographers and memorable photography," Metz said.

Back in the old days, photographers would compete against each other with the clippings that were printed in their publication. This meant that the images needed to be published before they could be entered in the contest.

The name of this contest goes back to those 'early' days - and it was chosen because most of our members are familiar with the term, which is closely related to the monthly contest run on SportsShooter.com.

Any SportsShooter.com member in good-standing can enter (via a web browser - no mailing of paper-based clips) up to 6 images per month in any of the four categories. The images must have been shot sometime in the previous month, and they don't need to be published.

The clip contest works as follows: The first 15 days of the month are the contest's 'entry period.' Members can enter their best images during this period of time via a web-based tool - where they submit their images to the contest right through the web browser. The second half of the month is the JUDGING period. All members vote on their favorite images. Member votes count for 100% of the total. (This has become a very popular and talked-about aspect because our members love the fact that there's no panel of 3 judges picking the winners.)

But there is a rule: Members can't vote for their own images - and we've written the program so that this cannot happen.

"It goes without saying that we're thrilled, honored, and excited that Canon has become an active part of SportsShooter.com," said Grover Sanschagrin, the site's Executive Producer. "We tip our SportsShooter.com bucket hat in their direction for their incredible generosity."
