Brendan Smialowski had the best 10-image portfolio from our extended weekend at the Churchill Downs Sports Journalism Seminar and was awarded a Nikon Coolpix camera. Additionally, Travis Matthews and Steve Boyle were recognized for their work and were offered internships at the Jackson Hole News and Guide. Willie Allen Jr. was given a credential to work for the BloodHorse magazine at the Kentucky Derby next weekend in recognition of his outstanding work and kick-ass sepia portraits. But, Willie will not be able to fly back out from California. The Most Humorous Approach Award was handed to Paul Clapp for his famous shot of the horse with the rake. Lastly, the most improved shooter was named Ben Hasty.
Now that the workshop is over, I must say that I feel great about the future of sports photography. I was honored to be shooting alongside some of the talent that was in Louisville. And I’m not even talking about the professionals that were there. However, I do want to thank them. Bill Frakes, Joe McNally, Dave Black, Rick Rickman, Lucas Gilman, Jason Kaye, Justin Fowler, and Tom Witte all worked their tails off to make sure that we had the best weekend possible. And we did.
Also, I need to thank Epson, Lexar, Apple Computers, Bogen, and Lowepro.
A special thanks goes to Dave and Jeff Snyder from Penn Camera for all their assistance. Further, Carol Fisher from Nikon Professional Services came through with a ton of gear and there is no way we can thank her (and NPS) enough. All the sponsors were unbelievable.
Lastly, the most important thank you goes to Skip Dickstein and Mike Corrado for putting all their passion and vision into this seminar. It was one of the best weekends of my life and I owe that to them.
On a final note, I talked to Skip about next year, and it is shaping up to be even better than this year was (as if that were possible). So any of you students who think this looked cool, and thought that good images came out of the event, need to check the website or contact one of the directors for information.
I hope everyone has enjoyed the stories and images that came out of Louisville this week. I’m sure that all the people that were there will be updating, so check their pages if you want to see some outstanding photography.
