ALOHA!
It's time to mark your calenders: THE COOLEST photography event of the year returns to Manhattan Beach, CA on November 7 and 8, 2003.
The Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau 2003 will be held at the Manhattan Beach Marriott Hotel and features more of everything ... more speakers, more breakout sessions, more portfolio critiques, more time to interact with the cool speakers and staff, a longer schedule ... and more darn FUN!
This year's Workshop & Luau will feature a great line-up of main speakers, including:
* Deanne Fitzmaurice, of the San Francisco Chronicle, recently named the Bay Area Press Photographers' Association Photographer of the Year.
* Ben Van Hook, past Pulitzer winner, now a freelance photographer and film maker.
* Jose Luis Villegas, from the Sacramento Bee, whose long-term project was just published in book form, "Home Is Everything The Latino Baseball Story".
With our expanded Friday schedule, we will begin on Nov. 7 at 1 pm. We will be offering over 14 breakout classes this year, covering a wide range of topics over the two days.
This year's breakout sessions include:
* "Covering Wars & Conflict" led by USA TODAY's Jack Gruber and the Los Angeles Times' Wally Skalij.

* Location Lighting again conducted by The Sporting News' Robert Seale.
* The Business of Photography with Rick Rickman.
* Adventure Photography led by Corey Rich.
* Digital Cameras and Work Flow by Trent Nelson, chief photographer with the Salt Lake Tribune.
* Using Remote Cameras with the AP's Mark J. Terrill.
* Community Journalism and Prep Sports led by the Contra Costa Times' Bob Larson.
* Revitalizing Your Photography and Balancing Family with Work led by the Seattle Times' Rod Mar.
* And something very cool and exciting that I am calling "The Sports Shooter Jedi Master Series" ... three individual classes conducted by Peter Read Miller, Sports Illustrated (on football); Andy Hayt, NBA Photos (on basketball) and V.J. Lovero, SI (on baseball).
Our one-on-one portfolio critiques with the faculty and staff of the Workshop & Luau, in addition to many local photographers and pictures editors, will be held on both Friday and Saturday evenings.
The Workshop & Luau's primary sponsor, Nikon, will be holding a FREE service clinic.
We will also be hosting an expanded trade show anchored by Nikon and

Samy's Cameras in addition to a wide assortment of vendors and manufacturers showing off the latest in equipment and photographic and digital accessories.
Also always, the Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau is FREE for full-time students and interns. Non-students and working pros can register for the very low price of $100 for the two-day event.
A special $84 a night room rate has been arranged by Nikon at the Manhattan Beach Marriott (this is nearly half the rack rate) and the location of the hotel is close to over a dozen great restaurants, several shopping centers (including my favorite: Fry's Electronics!), movie complexes, a golf course and ... the Pacific Ocean!
What's not to love?
So mark your calender ... keep an eye on your email and Sportsshooter.com for your special invitation announcing the opening of our on-line registration site (in about a week) and make plans to attend this very educational and entertaining weekend!
Mahalo!
