New Place to Surf in SoCal
Brooks NPPA launches Web site
By Joe Gosen, Brooks Institute of Photography
What does Rincon and www.brooksnppa.org have in common? Nothing really. But I’ll attempt to feed you a comparison.
Here it goes.
These are two great places to surf. One spot offers great waves to surf, the other offers a great place to surf the Web.
Read on.
Rincon, often called the “Queen of the Coast,” straddles the Santa Barbara and Ventura county lines. The popular surf spot offers several distinct lineups for surfers to catch seemingly endless rides.
Brooksnppa.org, often called “Brooks NPPA Dot Org,” is produced by visual journalism students at Brooks Institute, which has campuses in both Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. The site offers several distinct lineups of student photojournalism work, giving Web surfers seemingly endless rides into the lives of others.
Are you still reading?
Here’s where it all began. Less than a year ago Brooks Institute student (and SportsShooter.com member) Mark Nilsen spearheaded a campaign to start up a NPPA student chapter on campus. He thought it would be a good way to get students together outside of the classroom to work on projects and have a little fun. But mainly he saw it as a great opportunity to network and showcase work being done by students in our relatively new visual journalism program.
By October of 2002 we became an officially recognized NPPA chapter with officers in place and projects in the works. Shortly after starting the chapter Nilsen moved to New York to work as an assistant for photojournalist Steve McCurry. However, other students have picked up where Nilsen left off.
Chapter president Suzanne Rex headed up efforts to launch a Web site with the help of Brooks NPPA member Frank Bott and the support of chapter officers Jesse Groves, Courtney Turner and Aaron Kehoe.
The site features “Pictures of the Week” submitted by Brooks NPPA members, student-generated group photo projects and student portfolios among other content.
The site will continue to evolve with content over time, so check back regularly for updates.
Stay stoked.
Joe Gosen is on the visual journalism faculty at Brooks Institute and is the faculty advisor for Brooks NPPA.
