Brooks Institute Costa Rica Documentary Show Set to Open
By Jim McNay, Brooks Institute of Photography

What do photographers see when they visit a country that decades ago abolished its standing army to put those resources into social programs?

And what does that same country in the Western Hemisphere look like when vast amounts of land are devoted to protecting the land and animals of the region?

Ten Brooks Institute students took a photographic look at such a country, Costa Rica, for five weeks during November-December, 2002.

The presentation of their work from this annual documentary class project opens Friday and Saturday, March 28-29, 2003 in Santa Barbara.

An audio visual show will be presented Friday at 9 p.m. at Victoria Hall in Santa Barbara at 33 Victoria Street one-half block off State Street right downtown. Additional shows are on Saturday in the same location at 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Admission is $1.00.

The audio visual show is a 15-minute collage of all the projects the students photographed accompanied by original music commissioned for the project. The Costa Rica project joins the Brooks tradition of seven other shows about previous overseas classes.

That same weekend, an 80-print show from the project will be on display on the walls of the Brooks Institute Montecito campus.

A book entitled, "Pura Vida" (pure life) containing student work produced while in Costa Rica will go on sale opening weekend. The group's website showing pictures from the class is visible at: www.costarica.brooks.edu.

Additional information is available by calling Brooks Institute at 805-966-3888 or messaging Visual Journalism Program Director Jim McNay at jim.mcnay@brooks.edu.
