P.F. Bentley brings 'Real World Photojournalism' Course to Brooks Institute

Award-winning magazine photojournalist P.F. Bentley, often known for his coverage of political figures in the fast-paced world of political campaigns, has created a new photojournalism course using digital technology to have students deliver pictures on short deadlines.
Bentley calls his course "Real World Photojournalism" in part because it relies heavily on digital cameras and computers. Part of Bentley's message is "film is dead," and photographers have to be able to use modern tools to turn pictures around quickly.
Of his move to California from his two bases in Hawaii & New York, Bentley says, "I'm just happy to be here. I want to do whatever I can to help make the Visual Journalism program at Brooks the best in the country. We’re going to take this to new levels on the cutting edge of technology not widely seen in visual journalism education.”
This January Bentley joined the visual journalism faculty of Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. His teaching assignment will include both upper level photo and video courses.
During the Real World course, students will be required to transmit their pictures to Bentley who will act as photo editor. Students will transmit from such places as a storefront, a hotel lobby, and from their cars. Students will checkout both school-owned digital cameras and Macintosh iBook computers with appropriate software to complete their assignments.
Once students have some assignments under their belts, Bentley will turn up the intensity by providing them with some pack journalism shooting opportunities. Students will be expected to make pictures in high-pressure, competitive situations in which they find themselves shoulder-to-shoulder with invited working pros. Bentley plans to throw in a few unannounced surprises for the class, giving them the sometimes-need-to-change-plans-in-an-instant feel for real news events.
With this course, Bentley wants to expose students to many of the real-life scenarios he’s been through during his 30 years as a shooter and prepare them for the real world after they get out of school.
Along with Real World Photojournalism, Bentley will be teaching a picture story course and a secondary level digital video course called Digital Video for Photojournalists, much like the Platypus Workshop where Bentley has been a faculty member from the beginning. He currently produces and shoots stories for ABC's "Nightline" along with freelance editing projects.
Brooks Institute plans to add additional faculty this year in both the standard photojournalism and the digital video segments of the curriculum. Formal announcements for both positions have been posted in the classified ads section of SportsShooter.com.
