Brooks Institute Announces Speakers for January & February

To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.
These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. We are a mere 90-minutes north of Los Angeles. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.
For the January-February term, ALL SPEAKERS WILL APPEAR AT THE VENTURA CAMPUS. (See directions below.)
Visual Journalism Speakers Program - January-February - 2003
Speaker #1 - Wednesday, January 22, 2003 (Brooks Week #2)

The first Visual Journalism speaker of this term will be SURFING photographer Aric Crabb.
While holding down a newspaper staff photographer's job, Crabb has concentrated on a freelance career as a surf photographer, with special attention to the competitions at Mavericks in Northern California.
In addition to shooting, Crabb has been trained in water rescue and the use of jet skis to work the big waves of the ocean. Though still early in his surf career, Crabb has published cover and inside-the-book photographs for Surfing magazine and others.
Crabb's sports photography has included coverage of the PGA's U.S. Open, NBA playoffs and All-Star Game, the NHL playoffs, the World Series and many other events.
Ventura Campus of Brooks Institute of Photography - This presentation will be at the new Brooks Ventura campus. This is located off highway 33 on the way to Ojai at 5301 No. Ventura Avenue. Take the Canada Larga exit off highway 33.

Speaker #2 - Wednesday, February 5, 2003 (Brooks Week #4)
The husband and wife team of Arleen Ng and Tom Gallagher, known in part for their travel photography from interesting parts of the world, will be the second speakers of the term. The will speak about "Having a Balanced Life in Photography,"
As part of their travels the couple have visited Spain, Portugal, China and Italy. Gallagher also makes regular forays to the wilderness to do wildlife photography.
In her day job, Arleen Ng is a newspaper photographer while Gallagher is an Associated Press picture editor in San Francisco.
Both Gallagher and Ng got their early training in photography at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. After school they took up the pursuit of photojournalism. Ng has worked for the Oakland Tribune and the San Francisco Examiner. Gallagher has shot for the ANG newspaper group in the Bay Area and for the Oakland Tribune.

Special Event - Thursday, February 13, 2003, UCSB Campbell Hall
Live from...National Geographic: Wade Davis anthropologist, photographer and author.
Co-hosted by the University of California-Santa Barbara and Brooks Institute of Photography and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
This presentation is the second in a series of by the two Santa Barbara schools, following on the appearance last term of National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry.
Davis is best known as the author of "The Serpent and the Rainbow," about his explorations of Haiti and Voodoo culture. His new book, "Light at the Edge of the World" presents both his photography and writing from a 25-year career in the field. Among the regions he covers are Canada, the Andes, the Amazon, Haiti, Kenya and Tibet.
Davis presentation will be one night only at UCSB. Tickets are available for $12 through UCSB Arts and Lectures, 805-893-3535.

Speaker #3 - Wednesday, February 19, 2003 (Brooks Week #6)
The third speaker of the term will be Scott Sady of the Reno Gazette-Journal. His topic will be, "If I Only Knew Then What I Know Now."
In college and immediately thereafter, Sady did overseas work in Guatemala and Mexico. He covered Chiapas, Mexico as the first full-time Associated Press photographer assigned to that region. His pictures of the Chiapas rebel leader became known around the world. Sady knows the feeling of a warm (i.e., just fired) shotgun against his head.
In addition Sady has worked in El Salvador, Haiti, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
Today Sady holds down a newspaper job in Reno, NV and skis every opportunity he can.
