Ten Brooks Institute of Photography students and one instructor are currently in Costa Rica for this year's documentary photography class.
The group will spend five weeks in the country working on subjects they have researched for the last several months. Prior to departing on such class trips, the group meets for months to plan, discuss story and project ideas and engage in fundraising projects.
The group left Los Angeles Friday night, November 8 and flew to the capital city of San Jose. That metropolitan area and environs will be the group's base for the first two weeks. Stories within a day's travel or so will occupy the group at the front end of the trip. Already group members have explored butterfly farms, rainforests and some of the near-by volcanos.
During the final three weeks the group will fan out to all corners of the country for more in-depth coverage of the outlying areas.
When the group returns they will move immeditely into post-production with their pictures. Typical outcomes from such expeditions are a print show, an AV show with music. a website and a CD-ROM. This group may also produce a printed project on paper such as a small book or magazine.
One student's research into local professional soccer teams paid off the first weekend in town. He managed to find out when an important local match was scheduled, find a way out to the stadium and get in. Then it was time to see about getting down tot he field. Not a bad idea since the packed

stadium was vibrating in time with the pulse of the crowd.
With no local contacts or credentials, the student talked to a series of security guards seeking access to the field. Several told him no, but one eventually agreed. They opened the gate in the chain link fence separating the enthusiastic crowd from the field and he was on the sidelines. He made a pretty good set of pictures given the only brought a 200 millimeter lens. Just waited for the action to come to him and made pictures.
His bright yellow T-shirt that day helped him later than night. Watching the local equivalent of the ESPN highlights, he saw himself on the sidelines during the highlights!
Ya gotta love it!
