Brooks Institute Announces Speakers for November & December

To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.
These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. We are a mere 90-minutes north of Los Angeles. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.
Visual Journalism Speakers Program - November-December - 2002
Speaker #1 - Monday, November 4, 2002 (Brooks Week #1, Day #1):
The first Visual Journalism speaker of this term will be Steve McCurry of National Geographic.
McCurry has worked all over the world for National Geographic and many other publications for more than 20 years. Perhaps his best known image is of the "Afghan girl," a picture that has graced many magazine and book covers. Due to his recent work in Afghanistan. McCurry was able to find this woman, now grown with her own family.
This is a special presentation held in conjunction with the University of California - Santa Barbara Arts and Lectures. There is a $12 fee for adults, $8 for students. Tickets maybe obtained by calling UCSB Arts and Lectures at 805-893-3535.
This special event will be held at the UCSB Campbell Hall on the UCSB campus, 8 p.m., Monday, November 4, 2002.
Speaker #2 - Wednesday, November 20, 2002 (Brooks Week #3):
Santa Rosa Press-Democrat staff photographer and Sports Illustrated freelancer John Burgess will be the second speaker on Wednesday, November 20, 2002.
Burgess has accomplished a rare feat: He combines his work on a daily newspaper with top quality magazine work for one of the best publications in the field of sport. Burgess will talk about how he successfully combines these two lives, and still manages to have a family as well.
Note a special location for this event - Burgess' presentation on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 will be at the new Brooks Ventura campus. This is located off highway 33 on the way to Ojai at 5301 No. Ventura Avenue. Take the Canada Larga exit off highway 33.
If you are coming from the north (Santa Barbara) turn left at the stop sign, then left at the second stop sign. Brooks Ventura campus is the large complex off to the right.
If you are coming from the south (Los Angeles) turn right at the stop sign, then left at the second stop sign. Brooks Ventura campus is the large complex off to the right.
Go into the school and ask for the location of the Screening Room.
The presentation is free and runs from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 9 p.m. All are welcome.
Speaker #3 - Wednesday, December 11, 2002 (Brooks Week #6):
Matt McClain, staff photographer for the Ventura County Star and current Region 10 NPPA photographer of the year, will be this term's third speaker on Wednesday, December 11, 2002.
McClain works with one of the better teams of staff photographers in the West. The drive of the Ventura staff is to provide compelling content-driven pictures on daily deadlines. A quick scan of the publication's daily output shows this publication may soon become widely known as one of the better ones in the West. As the current regional photographer of the year, McClain has established himself as a solid member of this effort.
