Workshop & Luau 2002: Answers to commonly asked questions.
One week and counting until THE coolest photography event of the year!

By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter

As many of you know, Brad and I have been busy the past two weeks covering the baseball post season. Because of this, I have not been able to personally answer all of the private e-mails I have been receiving the past couple of days concerning the Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau 2002 which starts next Friday evening at the Manhattan Beach Marriott Hotel.

So I thought I would gather up the most commonly asked questions and answer them here.

SPORTS SHOOTER WORKSHOP & LUAU 2002 FAQ:

- WHAT TIME DOES IT START?
The Workshop & Luau 2002 will begin promptly at 7:30 pm. Nov. 1. (No, this should not be a surprise. This date was in the confirmation e-mail everyone received when they were accepted into the Workshop & Luau). Robbin Goddard and her crew will open the registration desk at 6:30 pm.

- I HAVE TO WORK SATURDAY. CAN I SHOW UP JUST ONE DAY?
If you cannot attend both days, please notify me ASAP. Yes you can attend just one day of this two-day event ... but it will be your loss 'cause you'd be missing some great speakers and presentations. If you can only make it one day because of work commitments, please e-mail me so I can make your status "part-time"... it just means that one of the limited edition Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau credential holder goes to someone else.

- CAN I GET MORE THAN ONE PORTFOLIO REVIEW?
Yes, you can get as many portfolio reviews as you want and time allows. If you can stand getting your work ripped by The Sporting News' Robert Seale; and then by Sports Illustrated's Robert Beck; and next by the Seattle's Times' Rod Mar and finally by SF Chronicle Pulitzer winner Kim Komenich ... please be my guest! Honestly... the group of portfolio reviewers we have at the Workshop & Luau were all hand-picked by me. They are all professionals, enjoy helping and working with students and fabulous photographers. They will offer you help and advice on your work... but with a critical eye as well. But please be aware that during the 3-4 hour one-on-one portfolio review time, TWO great presentations will be going on: Andy Hayt's "Working with Athlete's, Working with Teams" and Jack Gruber and Dave Black's session "Covering the Olympics". You might be best served getting one or two reviews and dropping in on one of these interesting presentations.

- IS THERE REALLY A "MEGA - DEATH LIST" IF I REGISTERED AND DON'T SHOW UP?
Yes and no. You won't be blacklisted from ever working in this business. There are still 30 people on the waiting list that will not get to attend and if you reg'd and don't show up (or cancelled after the Oct. 17 deadline), you essentially deprived someone deserving a chance to attend. Everyone that registered (even those that later cancelled) are on the Workshop & Luau mailing list ... but those in "good standing" (registered and showed up!) and the people that are on the waiting list but could not attend will be given priority in future Sports Shooter events.

- I DON'T SHOOT A LOT OF SPORTS. CAN I SHOW OTHER PHOTOS IN MY PORTFOLIO?
Kim Komenich, SF Chronicle's Pulizter Prize winner. Wally Skalij, runner-up Newspaper Photographer of the Year. Joe Gosen and Jim McNay, visual communication program at Brooks Institute of Photography. Mark J. Terrill, awarding winning shooter from the Associated Press. Alan Greth, director of photographer, Contra Costa Times. Barry Wong, multiple POY award winning photographer from the Seattle Times. Alex Gallardo, Calvin Hom and Anacleto Rapping, staffers with the Los Angeles Times. Arizona Republic's multi-award winner photographer Rob Schumacher. 'Nuff said?

- HOW COME I REGISTERED AFTER THE WORKSHOP WAS FILLED AND STILL GOT IN?
Great question! It is probably because you were a SportsShooter.com member or joined sometime shortly after you registered for the Workshop & Luau. As indicated in the initial announcement for the Workshop & Luau, SportsShooter.com members received priority.

- LOOKING OVER THE SPEAKER LIST I SEE SHOOTERS FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, THE SEATTLE TIMES, LA TIMES AND THE SPORTING NEWS. HOW COME "MISTER SPORTS SHOOTER" HIMSELF ISN'T ON THE PROGRAM?
Another good question and I'm glad you asked. When I started the Sports Shooter Newsletter 4 years ago one of the things I wanted to accomplish was get many of the people I know in "the biz" an opportunity to share their ideas, opinions and knowledge as well. I have been fortunate to have been invited to speak at many colleges, seminars and workshops over the years and when Brad, Ron and I initially talked about the possibility of staging a workshop one of the things I wanted to do was not make it "The Bert Hanashiro Show." So the Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau 2002 will feature photographers like Peter Read Miller (who hasn't spoken at a workshop in over 4 years) and Andy Hayt (who has not appeared at an event like this in over 10 years). As a side note, I will be speaking at San Jose State University the Thursday (Nov. 7) following the Workshop & Luau... I will be showing not only my sports work, but also my celebrity portraits and news photos.

- DID SOMEONE ACTUALLY CANCEL AT THE LAST MINUTE LAST YEAR WITH THE EXCUSE HE COULDN'T MAKE IT BECAUSE HE "GOT A DATE WITH A HOT BABE"?
Yes. And he is on the Mega - Death List.

- IS MONGO JOHNSON GOING TO BE THERE?
As of this writing Mongo is in Canada working on the new "Fantastic Four" movie being film there. We are holding out hope that he will get a break and be able to fly in for one day. Stay tuned.

-WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL WITH WEARING A HAWAIIAN PRINT SHIRT?
The Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau is an event that I wanted to make educational, inspiring and most of all a lot of FUN. So to keep the spirit light ...we don't want a stuffy, boring deal you'd get from the NPPA or GLAPPA!!! ... we ask that EVERYONE (staff and faculty included) wear a Hawaiian print shirt. If you don't have a Hawaiin print shirt or can't afford to buy one at Tommy Bahama's or your local thrift store ... Ronal Taniwaki will one an assortment available to rent, with proceeds going to the Sports Shooter Scholarship Fund.
