Two Canon 400 2.8's Stolen During Giants Celebration
Thief gets away with lenses and a body after Game 5 of the NLCS at Pacific Bell Park

Two freelance photographers had their Canon 400mm 2.8 lenses stolen after the Giants clinched the National League pennant at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco on Monday night.
Please be on the lookout for anyone trying to sell a nice Canon 400mm lens on eBay, etc. as it is probably one of the two lenses that were stolen at the ballpark.
Bill Nichols of Baseball America and Scott Clarke of ESPN fell victim to a thief as they left their gear in a secure area in the outside first base TV well at the far end of the St. Louis Cardinals dugout.
Nichols lost a new style Canon 400 2.8 IS lens with a Canon EOS-3 attached to it. Nichols' lens and camera body were hidden down below the photo well near the batting cage behind the Cardinals dugout. Someone had to know what they were looking for and where to get it to find Bill's gear.
Clarke lost the same style Canon 400 2.8 IS lens (serial #20579) attached to a monopod. Clarke's lens was in the above mentioned photo well in an area surrounded by working TV crews doing post game stand-ups on the field after the Giants won.
This unfortunate incident is something that happens more often than we would like each year when we cover post season baseball. It's a constant problem- what to do with your gear when you run onto the field and follow the team into the clubhouse to photograph the champaign celebration.
As many of us will be gathering in Anaheim and San Francisco during the next week we need to try and have a plan to have film runners, etc. on hand to watch our gear in the different photo locations to make sure that this doesn't happen again.
Thefts like these are especially difficult for freelancers who must pay for all of their own gear. Let's all try and be on the lookout for fishy-looking lenses on the open market and let's also pay attention to gear that is left behind during the post-game jube. We are all in this together.
Please notify me at the email address below if you have any information about the thefts Monday night.
