Finland's Heikki Sorsa warms up for the qualifications at the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
The upcoming Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau is adding a session on Olympic sports conducted by photographers Jack Gruber from USA TODAY and freelance photographer Dave Black.

The session entitle "Covering the Olympics" will feature work by Gruber and Black from the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney and the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics held this past February.

"In our efforts to add the best photographers and teachers we can to the program of the Workshop & Luau I felt that having Dave and Jack show their work from the Olympics and tell the stories behind these great pictures was something we couldn't pass up," Sports Shooter's Bert Hanashiro said.

"This is a great opportunity for the photographers and students registered for the Workshop & Luau to see coverage of some sports they may not see in their local daily newspaper," Hanashiro added.

"Covering the Olympics" joins an outstanding list of speakers and breakout sessions. Also on the program are main speakers Peter Read Miller and Robert Beck from Sports Illustrated and Wally Skalij from the Los Angeles Times.

Breakout sessions include location lighting conducted by The Sporting News' Robert Seale, business practices by Rick Rickman, covering prep

Hanashiro indicated that nearly 200 students and working professional photographers have signed up for the Nov. 1 - 2 Workshop & Luau.

Gruber, winner of several regional and national awards for his sports photography, has been a staff photographer with USA TODAY for three years. Prior to joining the staff of "The Nation's Newspaper" he was on staff of the Detroit News and the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Black has been to every Olympics since 1984 and his work has appeared in numerous national publications including Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and Time. He is a popular speaker at the Rich Clarkson Sports Photography Workshop and Photography at the Summit.
