The Manhattan Beach Marriott has a par-3 golf course behind the pool.
Sports Shooter is happy to announce that the 2002 Workshop & Luau will be held at the Manhattan Beach Marriott Hotel.

After the original 60 spots in the workshop filled within hours of the launch of the registration site, Sports Shooter and Nikon began looking for a new home for the event.

The event's new home is just minutes from Los Angeles International Airport, making it much more convenient for those flying in for the workshop.

"This is a fabulous hotel and an unbelievable location for the Workshop & Luau," Bert Hanashiro, said. "It's close to LAX, the beach and so many great places to eat and shop ... I think everyone will be very, very happy with the Manhattan Beach Marriott."

The Sports Shooter Workshop and Luau will be held Nov. 1 - 2 with Sports Illustrated's Peter Read Miller and Robert Beck and the LA Times' Wally Skalij as the featured speakers. The workshop also features breakout sessions on Location Lighting by The Sporting News' Robert Seale; The Business of Photography by Rick Rickman; Digital Work Flow Tricks & Tips conducted by the Salt Lake Tribunes' Trent Nelson and Ronal Taniwaki of Nikon, Remotes 101 by Mark J. Terrill from the AP and Shooting Prep Sports presented by Bob Larson from the Contra Costa Times.

"I think our line up of speakers and breakout sessions will provide a great educational experience for all of the people attending," Hanashiro said. "You don't have to be a sports shooter to learn from the talented photographers we're bringing in for the Workshop & Luau."

Hanashiro said that Nikon is responsible for expanding the workshop. "We owe a lot to Nikon for seeing the value of this great educational event and deciding that they wanted to be involved and spend the money so more people, students and pros, could attend," he said.

NOTES:

Sports Shooter's travel columnist Mongo Johnson has given me some of his observations on the Manhattan Beach Marriott:

"There's a plethora of restaurants (12) within 300 meters of the hotel. Ranging from Subway for the health and budget minded student to Flemings Steak House for the red meat eating, I'm-going-to-write-it-off-on-my-taxes working pro.

"If you want to pretend you're Tiger Woods (HA!), there's a 9 - hole par 3 golf course attached to the hotel and rental clubs are available.

"Manhattan Beach is just 5 minutes away and the airport is only 10 minutes away --- about a $12.00 cab fare. There is a 16-plex movie theater right across the street for the those of you that are too chicken for a portfolio review Friday night and a Starbucks down the block.

"Mongo's favorite electronics toy store (Fry's) is less than 200 meters from the hotel What's not to love about this hotel?"
