Freelance photographer Tom Hauck, right, receives his prizes after winning first place in the photographer category at the 2002 Mangin Photography Open. Presenting the awards are event organizer Brad Mangin, left, and prize chairman Joe Gosen, center.
The Fourth Annual Mangin Photography Open took place this past Saturday at Boundary Oak Golf Course in Walnut Creek, CA.

This year's event drew 55 participants, including 22 photographers and legendary San Francisco 49ers PR Guy Kirk Reynolds.

The Oakland Tribune's Ronnie Riesterer had the lowest gross score with a 78. Freelance photographer Justin Sullivan (a SportsShooter.com member) was the big winner with a net score of 65. Freelance photographer Tom Hauck (another SportsShooter.com member) won the photographer category with a net 67.

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Kim Komenich (1987, San Francisco Examiner), now the photo coach at the San Francisco Chronicle, turned in the grossest score of the day by shooting a 165. The Pulitzer Prize was better represented by the San Francisco Chronicle's Michael Macor (Oakland Tribune 1989 earthquake coverage), who carded a gross score of 83.

Everyone had a great time (even Alan Greth) and everyone won some cool prizes, thanks to the generosity of our many great sponsors, who included:

* Rocco Biale from Rocco's Pizzeria.
* Michelle Brea from Sports Illustrated.
* Scott Clarke from Oakley.
* Eli Friedman from Microsoft.
* Debbie Gallas from the Oakland Athletics.
* John Gosen from Red Lobster.
* Jody Grober from Roberts Distributors.
* Amy Kawadler from Canon.
* Tom Kunhardt from Kodak.
* Corey Leifer from NBA Entertainment.
* John Riley from LowePro
* Rich Pilling from Major League Baseball Photos.
* Kirk Reynolds from the San Francisco 49ers.
* Ron Taniwaki from Nikon.
* Glenn Weinfeld from Fujifilm.

Contra Costa Times Executive Photo Editor Alan Greth looks in the bushes for an errant shot during the Mangin Open golf tournament at Boundary Oaks Country Club in Walnut Creek, Calif. Saturday June 29, 2002. Greth shot a 139 for the day.
Veteran AP staffer Eric Risberg (SportsShooter.com member and contributor to Sports Shooter as "The Count") was out of town in Maine for the big wedding of former AP photographer John Swart. Risberg vows to be back next year.

Sadly, Ashton cigar rep. Chip Goldeen was unable to attend the festivities this year, resulting in many participants having to actually spend money on expensive bad cigars at the golf course. Everyone was asking for Chip. Hopefully he will be back next year, or at least maybe he will send some cigars!

A great time was had by all (there were no reported incidents involving Alan Greth) and the fun continued after the post-game keg was emptied as many of the hackers worked their way down the street for a great dinner at Rocco's Pizzeria (http://www.roccospizzeria.com).
