The Pulitzer Prize Photographs: Capture the Moment
SportsShooter.com member Vincent Laforet among those featured in Dallas Exhibit

By Sam Childers, www.jfk.org

SportsShooter.com member Vincent Laforet of The New York Times is featured in the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs ever shown in the U.S. The show opened at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas on February 18, 2002. This dates marks the 13th anniversary of the Museum. The show runs thru September 30, 2002.

The Pulitzer Prize Photographs: Capture the Moment features 120 photographs, color and black and white, including six by Texas photojournalists. First seen in newspapers, many of these images proved influential in times of crises and stirred the nation to action.

Recent photographs on exhibit include: Symbols of Peace, by James Hill, Fall, 2001 and Afghan Refugee Girl, by Vincent Laforet, both of the New York Times (Feature) and U.S. Attacked by Steve Ludlum, September 11, 2001, The New York Times (Spot News).

Representing a diverse scope of subject matter from brutality to heroism, the photographs range in date from 1941, the year of the first photography award, to the present.

On view in Dallas as part of a national tour, The Pulitzer Prize Photographs: Capture the Moment is the premiere exhibition for the Museum's new Seventh Floor Expansion. The $2.5 million renovation project transformed the seventh floor from under utilized warehouse storage to a dynamic interpretive space in four months. Programming plans include innovative installations, exhibitions, performances, education activities, special events, and public discourse. The adaptable quality of the new space is intended to complement the permanent exhibit on the sixth floor that addresses the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The Seventh Floor Expansion evokes its original warehouse appearance by highlighting architectural components of the 1901 historic building, such as vintage brick, glass, ceiling rafters and structural columns.

Contemporary elements, such as the sliding walls, glass and steel stairwell, and flexible lighting and technological systems, echo the industrial atmosphere. The gallery space provides 5500 square feet and state-of-the-art technical facilities for exhibition design. This expansion doubles the Museum's physical capacity and programming potential. Also provided on the seventh floor are amenities to accommodate the Museum's 500,000 visitors each year. Notable additions include a contemplative area, increased restroom capacity, and a focused retail space.

Jeff West, Executive Director of The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza commented: "It seems fitting to introduce the Seventh Floor with a powerful exhibition like Capture the Moment. The Pulitzer Prize winning photographs depict the events and issues that made the nation 'reflect and respond.' It's the news of our era-moments of great pride and scenes of deep despair. The recollection of these moments is made richer at this historic site. This exhibition is the first of many opportunities Dallas will have to 'reflect and respond' to provocative programming in this space."

The Pulitzer Prize Photographs: Capture the Moment was developed by the Newseum, the interactive museum of news, located in Arlington, VA, in association with Business of Entertainment, Inc., NYC, Cyma Rubin, Curator.

The exhibit includes several instantly recognizable images. Among them are Joe Rosenthal's World War II photograph of the raising of the flag over Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima (1945 Pulitzer); Robert H. Jackson's photograph of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald (1964 Pulitzer); and Scott Shaw's photograph of baby Jessica McClure just rescued from the well in Midland, Texas (1988 Pulitzer for spot news photography). Recent events such as the Oklahoma City bombing, the attack at Columbine High School, and the seizure of Elian Gonzalez are represented as well.

In his 1904 will, publisher Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911) left a $2 million endowment to Columbia University to establish both a school of journalism and the Pulitzer Prize, which recognizes excellence in newspaper journalism, books, music, and drama. Over the years, the categories have been modified by the Pulitzer Board, which added a prize for photography in 1942. The photography category expanded to two awards in 1968, one for spot news and one for features. The winning photographs may be black and white or color, and may consist of one image, a sequence, or an album. Computer manipulation of photographs is prohibited. In addition to the coveted distinction, the Pulitzer Prize winners receive a $5,000 cash award.

The exhibit catalog features biographies of the prize-winning photographers as well as interviews with many of the surviving photographers. Seymour Topping, Administrator of The Pulitzer Prizes, Columbia University, wrote the introduction. The catalog (soft cover, 208 pages) was co-edited by exhibition curator Cyma Rubin and Eric Newton, formerly news historian at Newseum. Rubin also produced and directed "Moment of Impact: Stories of the Pulitzer Prize Photographs." This Emmy award-winning TV documentary examines six Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs (color; 110 minutes). Both items are available in the Museum Store.

The Museum is open to the public from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily. Audio tours are available for the permanent exhibit in seven languages.

The Pulitzer Prize Photographs: Capture the Moment exhibit is sponsored by: American Airlines, The Dallas Morning News, WFAA-TV 8, TXCN-Texas Cable News, Belo Interactive and Publicis.

Photographs for media use are available upon request. For information and group tour reservations, please call 214-747-6660 or visit the Web site at www.jfk.org.
