Leading Off: McGwire Hits 70
By Robert Hanashiro
As I put together this fourth edition of SptShtr, I am 34,000 feet in the air on a flight to New York for the start of the World Series. So it seems appropriate that this issue lead off with impressions from six photographers on covering Mark McGwire's record breaking 62nd home run.
Roger Maris' record, set in 1961, seemed one that might stand forever. Players had come close and there always is excitement when you start projecting out season totals from games in April and May. But injury, player strikes and the grind of a long season has seen most far short.
Until now.
When the smoked finally cleared, 70 now stands as the record and two players, McGwire and Sammy Sosa of the Cubs both eclipsed the magic 61.
The excitement generated first by the race to 62 and then in the final
weekend of the season, was astounding.
What I have for you below is basically the unedited writings of several friends who were fortunate enough to have covered that historic night in St. Louis.
