Gear Corner
The Hoodman Cometh
By Robert Hanashiro
One of the most RIDICULOUS things I've seen at a baseball game was last summer when a wire service photographer spent two innings with a coat over his head while trying to edit digital camera images on his laptop from the 1st base photo position at Edison International Field.
Now my Armenian friend won't have to use his Ralph Lauren jacket as drape to block out the light while he stares at that Dell laptop ... the Hoodman has arrived.
While this handy device only makes you a little less conspicuous than having a coat on your head, it works a whole lot better. The Hoodman "laptop e-clipse" is a spring-loaded shield that fits around the computer screen and essentially blocks out most of the ambient light so you can get a more accurate look at your images and can judge color and sharpness.
The hood fits snugly around all laptop screens and comes with a small, flat travel bag that so the Hoodman fits easily into your computer or camera bag.
Another use for the Hoodman is to keep the competition sitting next to you from seeing what you're filing...this certainly can help prevent the fights and screaming matches that happen in the Staples Center digital darkroom between a couple of unnamed local shooters after Lakers games.
If you do any editing and transmitting outside (at baseball or tennis for instance) the Hoodman is definitely for you.
The Hoodman "Laptop e-clipse" sells for $39.95 and can be ordered by calling 800-818-3946 or going to their web site, www.hoodmanusa.com.
