Almost 90 percent of my shoots are on location, and the position of the sun is always the first variable I think of. Sun Seeker: 3D Augmented Reality Viewer is an amazing iPhone app that has been worth the $6.99.
While on location, I use the augmented reality feature and I can see the sun's path relative to the camera view.
It actually charts the solar path on the screen so you can see where the sun will be at any given time.
Other features include a map view with arrows that show the sun's direction relative to your position, a chart that gives you all the solar data (sunrise, sunset time, angle of sun at any given time, etc) you need for any given day.
