Douglas Kirkland Headlines Brooks Speakers Program for May & June 2009
Colin Crawford and Jenning Steger join Kirkland in the spring speakers series in Southern California.

Colin Crawford
The State of Visual Journalism
As deputy managing editor for visuals at the Los Angeles Times, Colin Crawford manages a staff of editors, photojournalists and technicians at one of the largest newspapers in the country. Under his leadership, The Times' photography department has won the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography in both 2003 and 2004 and was part of the Public Service Award in 2005 and Explanatory Reporting in 2007. Four times the photo staff has garnered the Angus McDougall Overall Excellence in Editing Award for Newspapers, in the Pictures of the Year International competition. They have also been awarded Best Use of Photography from the National Press Photographers Association and the Pictures of the Year International competitions.

Zen and the Art of Photo Editing
Patagonia Photo Editor Jenning Steger will speak about photo editing for both commercial, editorial & journalistic uses. I will also touch base on workflow, photo archiving, selecting & evaluating images for publication and what makes a compelling photo. Jenning works on print catalogs, web, trade shows, ads and in store environment image selection plus culling the overall photo collection. She collaborates with independent & staff photographers, designers, print coordinators, athletes to execute hundreds of company photos needs both internationally & domestic.

A Life in Photography
Douglas Kirkland started his career at Look and Life Magazines in the 60’s and 70’s "golden age" of photojournalism. He has worked on the set of over 100 motion pictures (Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, 2001, A Space Odyssey, Out of Africa, Titanic, Moulin Rouge and Australia) and his iconic images of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Nicholson, Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas, among others are known all over the world. Some of his books include Light Years, Legends, Body Stories, An Evening With Marilyn, the best selling James Cameron's Titanic, Freeze Frame a decade by decade look behind the scenes from 50 years photographing the entertainment industry published October 2007 and Coco Chanel, Three Weeks published in the Fall of 2008. He has received numerous awards among which a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American S.O.C, a Lucie for Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Photography in 2003, The Golden Eye of Russia in April 2006 and a Life Time Achievement Award from CAPIC in his native Toronto Canada in May 2006.
All events are free, open to the community, and held at Brooks Institute’s Ventura Campus 5301 N. Ventura Ave.
Take highway 101 to Ventura, then highway 33 toward Ojai. Take the Canada Larga exit off highway 33. Turn left at the bottom of the offramp, then left at the second stop sign. Brooks Ventura campus is the large complex off to the right.
