Remembering Bridget O'Brien (1981-2007)
By Tyson Evans
On Oct. 18, the life of a fellow Sports Shooter member ended tragically when Bridget O'Brien, only 26 years old, was killed in a car accident in Ohio.
She was a spectacular friend and photojournalist, and will be missed dearly by the lucky individuals who crossed her path.
Bridget's energy propelled many young journalists into the field. When I was a freshman at UCLA she took me under her wing. For a 19-year-old kid from Missouri still adrift in Los Angeles, her confidence in a nervous and uncertain young photographer meant more than I can articulate.
Her work at UCLA's Daily Bruin represented student journalism at its very best -- ambitious, enlightening, captivating. After graduation, she pursued her passion across the globe while working for USA TODAY, Newsday and the New York Times. Before the accident, she was living in Melbourne and was in the US while photographing her husband's band tour.
Since her death, a group of friends and family have established a scholarship fund in her honor. It will support students who pursue the type of work she focused on: Journalism with a global reach and local consequence.
I hope you would consider a donation, no matter the amount. We're striving to fund ambitious student journalism in Bridget's memory for more than a lifetime.
