-MetaCreations is offering a limited time special on their new KPT Equalizer filter. Through July 31, the Equalizer is available FREE for download at MetaCreation's website. The Equalizer is a PhotoShop plug-in that offers smoother and more controllable sharpening. Normally $29.95, the Equalizer can be downloaded at http://www.metacreations.com/products/kptx/. Follow the normal instructions for purchasing the product, but when you check out, the price will be "zero."

- One of the WORST kept secrets of the past 6 months has been Nikon's new professional class digital camera, dubbed the D1. While rumors and wild theories have been bouncing around the internet prior to it's official unveiling, digital guru Rob Galbraith has the detailed skinny on what COULD be a revolutionary camera on his DigiNews page. Rob has as much information and hard data on the D1 that's currently available and it can be accessed on his website at: http://www.robgalbraith.com/diginews/. The fallout that Nikon's $5,000 D1 has created can already be felt with the announcement today that Kodak has dropped the prices of both the DCS520 and 620 (see Bruce Kwitney's entry in this issue).

- Congratulations to Mark J. Terrill of Ap/Los Angeles for his second Time magazine cover in 8 months. His image of US soccer players hugging after beating China in the WWC final graced Time's cover two weeks ago (last Oct. his image of the New York Yankees celebrating their World Series sweep over the Padres made a regional cover).

- Gary Miller has left the San Bernardino Sun to become the new assistant director of photography at the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

- Michelle Segall is the new assistant sports picture editor at the Newark Star-Ledger in New Jersey.

- Eddie Adams tells us that the deadline for "Barnstorm XII," his annual photojournalism workshop, has been extended to July 23. The Eddie Adams Workshop is the preeminent event of it's kind and will be staged this year Oct. 8-11. The workshop, for students and professionals with less than three years experience, is sponsored by Nikon and is tuition free for those accepted. - The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that San Diego Padres team photographer Joel Zwink has filed a civil suit against two members of the Pirates. The suit claims that Zwink suffered eye damage when outfielder Turner Ward and pitcher Jason Schmidt allegedly shined a laser pointer in his 400mm lens while he was looking through it on April 20. The pair were captured on video shining the laser pointer, but no criminal charges were ever sought by the San Diego law enforcement authorities.
