Photo of the Day: Bugler Jay Cohen plays for a spectator before the beginning of the first race at the Santa Anita Race Park on Apr. 5, 2007. Cohen said he became a friend with the spectator because he comes to the race park everyday.
SportsShooter.com member Ikuru Kuwajima's photo of an unusual off-track moment caught the eye of Sports Shooter Academy faculty and was declared "Photo of the Day" during the workshop's first evening critique and slideshow Thursday, April 5, 2007.

The photo, a colorful sports feature shot at Santa Anita Park, depicts a moment between the horse track's veteran bugler and a better.

"I was just lucky before the race," Kawajima said Thursday night. "I just saw the guy talking to the old man and I thought it was a nice moment."

A "Photo of the Day" is selected by faculty members during editing and critique sessions each night of the five-day hands-on shooting workshop.

"It's a photo I hadn't seen before," said instructor Myung J. Chun of the daily pick.

"It showed a lot of initiative to walk around and follow the bugler into a hallway and find this picture. It takes you off the field."

Sports Shooter Academy IV continues through Sunday, when one of the three daily winners will be named "Best Single Photograph" for the workshop and awarded a set of PocketWizard Plus courtesy of LPA Designs.

Sports Shooter Academy IV continues in Irvine

The fourth installment of Sports Shooter Academy continued Friday, April 6, 2007 in Southern California with a variety of classes and events for participants to photograph.

Forty workshop participants, most of whom are SportsShooter.com members, ventured to venues scattered across Orange County or spent the day photographing horse racing at Santa Anita Park, home track of famed thoroughbred Seabiscuit.

For those not at the track, the morning began with a classroom session and portrait shoot led by Los Angeles Times staff photographer and SportsShooter.com member Myung J. Chun. "Lighting in a Bag" was a demonstrative class in portable studio lighting using off-camera strobes and speedlights.

"I learned that lighting dynamic portraits doesn't have to cost a million bucks and doesn't have to take hours to set up," said Kirby Yau, a freelance photographer and SportsShooter.com member from San Diego who attended the morning session.

The lighting demonstration was followed by a class in preparing and packing for assignments on the road, led by USA Today staff photographer and SportsShooter.com member Jack Gruber. Often on the road or out of country, Gruber gave workshop participants an inside look at his systematic method of packing and traveling at a moment's notice.

"I've been through that where I've been at a shoot and not had the simple things that are easy to forget. (Jack) talked about just being prepared for the unexpected," said workshop participant Bruce Omori, a freelance photographer and SportsShooter.com member based in Hawaii who shoots for the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

"His check list is incredible. I've got to do that."

In the field, assignments continued with a variety of sports ranging from community-based boxing to collegiate athletics and a scrimmage between AVP pro beach volleyball players.

In nearby La Habra, instructors and SportsShooter.com members Matt Brown, a Southern California freelancer, and Sean Haffey, a staff photographer at the San Diego Union Tribune, led a session in both action and location portraits at La Habra Boxing Club.

Boxing is a new addition to Sports Shooter Academy.

"I was looking forward to seeing the professional approach to boxing even though it was a hometown gym," said SportsShooter.com member Corey Perrine, a staff photographer at The Telagraph in Nashua, New Hampshire.

"So far, it's been my favorite event because I was able to develop a relationship with our subject," Perrine said of the club's intimacy. "When they trust you, then they understand your vision and they get more relaxed and more comfortable, then you become more invisible."

In addition to boxing and horse racing, Friday's schedule included collegiate water polo, volleyball, and baseball at California State University at Long Beach as well as a professional beach volleyball scrimmage coordinated at the campus specifically for the Academy. Across town at Cal State Fullerton, participants photographed a sunset doubleheader of division one collegiate softball against Cal State Northridge and a Titans baseball game against University of California at Irvine.

Saturday shoots include more baseball, softball and water polo as well as a collegiate crew competition, rugby, and a magazine portrait shoot of the AVP's Logan Tom. Participants will attend the Sports Shooter Annual Contest judging which is being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Saturday night in conjunction with the Academy.

The contest judging is open to all SportsShooter.com members to attend.
