The judges, from Sports Illustrated, were Steve Fine, Director of Photography; Jimmy Colton, Photography Editor; George Washington, Deputy Photo Editor; and David Bergman, contributing photographer.

Snipes, a recent graduate of Eastern Washington University, has interned at The News Tribune (Washington); The Olympian (Washington); Bozeman Daily Chronicle (Montana); and the Seattle Times (Washington). He is currently a freelance photographer working in the Northwest United States.

Twelve students were eligible to submit their portfolios to the SportsShooter.com Student Portfolio Contest, each of them finishing first in the contest's 'Week's Work' category. Each month, the student who wins the monthly 'Week's Work' award is invited into the annual end-of-year portfolio competition.

A panel of 4 judges (3 editors and 1 photographer) gathered together at the New York City office of Sports Illustrated to debate the merits of each portfolio, and choose a winner.

The panel of judges unanimously voted Snipes' portfolio the best based largely on the fact that there were no weak images or picture stories entered. Snipes' ability to edit his portfolio very tightly was praised by the judges.

In addition to Snipes, students who had portfolios entered in the contest were: Alyssa Schukar, Travis Haughton, Nick Adams, Josh Birnbaum, Jordan Murph, Sam Adams, Carlos Delgado, Justin Mott, Anthony Souffle, Daryl Peveto and Melissa Golden.

The images, and the audio comments of the judges for all 12 portfolios can be seen and heard in a series of Quicktime movie presentations available here:

This award marks the successful completion of the second year of the Nikon-sponsored SportsShooter.com Student Portfolio Contest. Without Nikon's generous support of educational events for students, this contest, the monthly prizes, and the D200 grand prize would not have been possible.
