To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.

These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.

Please read carefully to see at which of several locations these presentations will be made. Many are held off-campus. (See directions below.)

NOTE: The NEW start time for these presentations is 6:30 pm.

Big Time Athletics, and Stock, Stock, Stock: A Freelance Photographer's Journey

SportsShooter.com member Dave Black has covered many of the world's leading athletes, in their youth and in their prime, including Alex Rodriguez and Barry Bonds, John Elway, Olympic gymnasts Paul Hamm, Mary Lou Retton, Kari Strug, Olympic skaters Sarah Hughes, Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Peggy Flemming, horse racing, Formula I auto racing, and Very Excellent Surfing Pictures shot in Maui! (Hint!)

And he does stock, stock, stock, stock, stock, stock. As Dave says, "Competitive athletes make the BEST models."

On Assignment with a National Geographic Photographer

Since 1989 Gerd Ludwig has worked primarily for National Geographic Magazine in 70 countries. Other publications include TIME, GEO, Fortune, LIFE, Newsweek, and Stern. His book, Broken Empire: After the Fall of the USSR is a visual summary of the post-Communist era in this country. Most recently he has done new work for the 20th anniversary of the nuclear disaster site in Chernobyl.

When he quizzed photo editors about what worked and what did not work about photographer's Websites, photographer and Web guru Grover Sanschagrin uncovered surprising results. He asked basic questions about Flash or HTML and got back hard answers. What are the best ways to drive traffic to YOUR site? What about pricing? Licensing? Marketing strategies? Our Special Guest Explains.


Brooks Ventura campus

From highway 101 - Take highway 33 toward Ojai. Exit at Canada Larga. Drive toward the visible open field and hills. At the traffic sign, turn left. Brooks Institute is visible on the right. Park in the back of the campus, then walk in toward the school complex.


Holy Cross School - at the Ventura Mission - downtown Ventura, 211 E. Main St.

From the north (Santa Barbara) - Take 101 south, exit Main Street. Turn right off off-ramp. The mission is on left past Ventura Ave.

From the south (LA) - Take 101 north, exit at California Street. Turn right on California at end of off-ramp. Go straight through Thompson and turn left at Main Street. The mission is on right about four blocks ahead.

If from Main Street you go to Palm, turn on to Palm toward the small hot dog stand. Then at the first alley, turn left and park on the right hand lot near the Holy Cross School auditorium. The auditorium itself is the large building up the hill on the right.

From Brooks Ventura campus - Take 33 South, take the Main Street exit. Go right off the exit ramp. Go left on Main Street. The mission on left past Ventura Ave.
