Derek Montgomery Wins First Photo of the Day at Sports Shooter Academy III

Dirt and determination mix along the homestretch of the final race of the day Thursday, November 2, 2006 at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, CA. member Derek Montgomery's photograph of a jockey and his ride being pelted by clumps of flying dirt was voted Thursday's Sports Shooter Academy III "Best Photo of the Day" on November 2, 2006.

The Sports Shooter Academy is currently being held in southern California with 40 registered participants, a majority of whom are members, from throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Montgomery's photograph was chosen from among 133 edits produced by the Academy participants and edited from the first day of shooting.

SSA III participants have the opportunity to cover NCAA Division I sports through an arrangement with the Big West Conference in addition to the horse racing at Hollywood Park, beach volleyball,
college rugby and community college football.

"I think this photo has everything," said SSA faculty member and member Michael Goulding, a staff photographer with the Orange County Register, "It's tight, makes use of the beautiful light, the face of the all works."

The photo was taken during the workshop's horse racing session led by member and Los Angeles Times staff photographer Wally Skalij at Hollywood Park Race Track.

"We had wonderful light and horse racing is such a fun sport to shoot," Skalij said, "I can't wait to see what the Friday group will do at the track."

Sports Shooter Academy III tipped off Wednesday evening, November1, 2006 in Orange County with short presentations by the faculty, which also includes Southern California freelance photographer and member Matt Brown, member Donald Miralle of Getty Images, member Myung J. Chun and Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter founder and a staff photographer with USA TODAY.

Late afternoon horse racing at Hollywood Park in Los Angeles on November 2, 2006. members Crystal Chatham and Jordan Murph are assisting the faculty. Orange County Register sports picture editor and member Eugene Tanner is helping with the nightly critique session and slide show edits.

"This was a great first day (of shooting)," Miralle commented after the completion of the participants slides show, "They really set the bar high. I was really impressed." member Craig Glover's photo also shot at Hollywood Park of horses running from shadows into a shaft of light as well as a second horse racing image by Montgomery were also recognized by the faculty during the slide show and were contenders from the "Photo of the Day" award.

Other sports on the workshop schedule Thursday were men's and women's basketball at U.C. Irvine, waterpolo and volleyball. Also classes covering location portraits, studio lighting and remotes were on the schedule.

The Sports Shooter Academy continues through Sunday November 5 and is sponsored by Canon, USA, Think Tank Photo and Samy's Camera.

Prizes will be given to each individual "Photo of the Day" as well as the Best Single Photo (produced during SSA III) and the Best Portfolio by a Student and the Best Portfolio by a Professional.
