David Hume Kennerly Headlines Brooks Speakers Program for September & October 2006
Legendary photographer to speak in Ventura

To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.

These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.

Please read carefully to see at which of several locations these presentations will be made. Many are held off-campus. (See directions below.)

NOTE: The NEW start time for these presentations is 6:30 pm.

Brooks Institute of Photography Visual Journalism Speakers Program - September - October, 2006

Speaker #1 - Tuesday, September 19, 2006
Holy Cross School Auditorium, 211 E. Main St., (Ventura Mission), Ventura, Calif., 6:30 pm

Two for One-Night: Wide Ranging Photojournalism

Photographers Michael Lewis and Jim Sugar will combine their talents for this Olympus sponsored presentation of two distinct photojournalists.

Michael Lewis concentrates on nature, people and landscapes around the world and in the American West. He has worked on five National Geographic books and was part of the Day in the Life of Africa series.

Jim Sugar is a National Geographic veteran of more than twenty years. Among his stories are Islands of Spain, Provence, Ireland and The Ukraine. Sugar has a long-standing passion for aviation. He has covered designer Burt Rutan's X-plane and the Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer.

Finding Your Visual Voice

San Jose Mercury News staff photographer Susanna Frohman concentrates on long-term projects whenever possible. Her projects have taken her to Europe, Asia, to the Middle East and the South Pacific. She was recently a finalist for the Alicia Paterson grant awarded for photojournalists. In two National Geographic programs she has helped bring photography to underserved youth.

The View From Photojournalism's Mountaintops

Former White House photographer David Hume Kennerly has accomplished many of the goals photographers' consider important to say they "have it made." As presidential photographer to Gerald Ford, he has perhaps the best presidential access of any photographer ever. While in Vietnam, he won the Pulitzer Prize. Along the way he has worked for TIME, LIFE, Newsweek and numerous other publications. His continued excellent relations with the Bush White House continue to bring him assignments


Holy Cross School - at the Ventura Mission - downtown Ventura, 211 E. Main St.

From the north (Santa Barbara) - Take 101 south, exit Main Street. Turn right off off-ramp. The mission is on left past Ventura Ave.

From the south (LA) - Take 101 north, exit at California Street. Turn right on California at end of off-ramp. Go straight through Thompson and turn left at Main Street. The mission is on right about four blocks ahead.

If from Main Street you go to Palm, turn on to Palm toward the small hot dog stand. Then at the first alley, turn left and park on the right hand lot near the Holy Cross School auditorium. The auditorium itself is the large building up the hill on the right.

From Brooks Ventura campus - Take 33 South, take the Main Street exit. Go right off the exit ramp. Go left on Main Street. The mission on left past Ventura Ave.


Poinsettia Pavilion - 3451 Foothill Road, Ventura, Calif.

From the North - From the Santa Barbara area take Highway 101 to the Seaward Avenue exit, turn left on E. Harbor Blvd, turn left on So. Seaward, and travel about one mile. At Poli St (to the left) and Foothill Road (to the right) turn right and follow Foothill Road for approximately one mile. Turn left at 3451 Foothill Road up the hill into the parking lot of the Poinsettia Pavilion.

From the South - From Los Angeles take Highway 101 to the Seaward Ave. exit, turn right on Seaward and travel about one mile. At Poli St (to the left) and Foothill Road (to the right) turn right and follow Foothill Road for approximately one mile. Turn left at 3451 Foothill Road up the hill into the parking lot of the Poinsettia Pavilion.
