Eight members of SportsShooter.com are currently participating in a print show and silent auction to raise funds for the Brooks NPPA student organization.
This show was originally thought of as a way to showcase the best of the best images submitted by Brooks Institute of Photography students last year. It's grown from there into an auction to raise funds for the student chapter of the National Press Photographer's Association (NPPA). Every image is available for silent auction. The 17 Brooks students, which include the eight SportsShooter.com members all graciously donated the images. All of the proceeds from the auction will go to the general fund of the student chapter to offset the cost of its operations.
All of the images can be seen in the Top 20 gallery on our Web site: http://www.brooksnppa.org. A closing reception for the show, which is open to the public, is scheduled for Friday, June 16, 2006, from 7 -9 p.m. Refreshments will be served and the winning bidders can take their images home that night. The Ventura Campus of Brooks Institute of Photography is located at 5301 N. Ventura Ave., in Ventura, Calif., just five miles north of Ventura on Highway 33 (Cañada Larga exit). If you are interested in bidding on any of the images and cannot make it to see the prints in person, you can contact me via e-mail or phone to make arrangements.
Here's a little background on the student chapter and the current print show.
In 2005 I was presented with the opportunity to become the faculty advisor for the Brooks Institute of Photography student chapter of the NPPA. My job would be to oversee the chapter, which at the time consisted of about 100 members and facilitate the student officers who were in charge of the operations of the chapter. This role of advisor was previously held by Joe Gosen, a fellow faculty member in the Visual Journalism program here at Brooks, who started the student chapter back in 2002. Gosen is also one of the founding owners of SportsShooter.com.

The student chapter was founded to fill a need within the student body in the fledgling VJ program to further support professional opportunities within the photojournalism field. In addition, the chapter set out to facilitate gathering times and locations for extracurricular educational topics such as location lighting, ethics, multimedia, wild land fire safety, etc. Lastly it was created to motivate the students to further their own education and advancement.
Four years later, the chapter (now with over 120 active members) fulfills those same needs and much more. Shortly after Joe and the handful of Brooks students who founded the chapter launched a Web site (http://www.brooksnppa.org) to become the central spot for students to keep up to date on activities, get information, and showcase student work. This led to the Week in Pictures feature on the Web site, which is updated every week school is in session. This feature turned out to be the most popular section of the site both within the student body, which submitted their work for consideration, and with peers, family and friends who frequented the WIP section to see the student work.
Today the Brooks NPPA Web site is more popular than ever with features added since I took over, such as a featured internship and featured interview, which change every session. The site has also gone through a re-design to facilitate the new features and showcase almost daily updates of news and events concerning the students and their work. Most recently we've added student-produced multimedia projects and podcast to our site.
The selection of the Week in Pictures happens weekly and is edited by the five student officers, myself and a guest editor (any Brooks student who is interested in the guest editor position should contact any Brooks NPPA officer about availability). On average we receive about 40-50 images on any given week. Those images are narrowed down to what we feel is Week in Pictures, that are examples of the highest quality of the photojournalism skills that we teach in the Visual Journalism program.

The student officers came up with the idea of selecting the best of the published Week in Pictures from 2005 with the idea of showcasing those images in a print show and on our Web site. Joe Gosen was asked by our student officers to edit all of the published images from 2005, about 300, to less than 100. He came up with about 50. From there, those selections were sent to David Frank, Deputy Director of Photography at The New York Times. Frank, along with his boss, Michele McNally, AME - Photography, chose the top 20 images, which are currently hanging in the gallery on the Ventura campus of Brooks and online on our Web site.
As our chapter, the VJ program and our field gravitate into more multimedia; the Brooks student chapter of the NPPA work to mirror the industry yet maintains a balance with old fashion visual story telling. I am very proud of the current student officers, Gwyneth Roberts, Daryl Peveto, Ryan Nieto, LeAnne Snyder and Aaron Vogel for pulling off this un-precedented show and of everybody who has contributed to the Brooks NPPA.
