Corey Rich and Olympic panel Headline Brooks Speakers Program for May & June 2006

To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.
These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.
Please read carefully to see at which of several locations these presentations will be made. Many are held off-campus. (See directions below.)

Adventure Photography: Mountains, Rivers and Book Publishing
Climber and adventure photographer and SportsShooter.com member Corey Rich has covered rock climbing in Mexico, surfing in Panama, an ultra-marathon in the Sahara and has hopped freight trains in the American West. He has been published in National Geographic Adventure, Sports Illustrated, Outside and Men's Journal and has worked for Patagonia, Nike, the North Face and Anheuser-Busch. His new book, My Favorite Places ( http://www.sportsshooter.com/education/book_profile.html?id=647 ), shows pictures of adventure athletes in their favorite outdoor practice and training locations.

A panel of photographers and SportsShooter.com members who covered this year's Winter Olympics will talk about the thrill of victory and agony of defeat in the Italian Alps. Behind-the-scenes video will show how photographers got their work done. Panelists include: K.C. Alfred of the San Diego Union, Robert Hanashiro of USA Today, Rick Rickman of Newsport and Brooks Institute (on assignment for Newsweek) and Wally Skalij of the Los Angeles Times.

The Death of Kevin Carter: Casualty of the Bang Bang Club
Filmmaker Dan Krauss’s documentary "The Death of Kevin Carter" was nominated for a 2006 Oscar. Carter covered some of the most brutal news events on the world stage in South Africa and eventually won the Pulitzer Prize. He and his closest friends became known as "The Bang Bang Club" for their intense work. Kraus is a former photojournalist who worked in the U.S., Africa and
the Middle East. His film has won awards in several film festivals and is scheduled for broadcast on the HBO/Cinemax network.
Holy Cross School - at the Ventura Mission - downtown Ventura, 211 E. Main St.
From the north (Santa Barbara) - Take 101 south, exit Main Street. Turn right off off-ramp. The mission is on left past Ventura Ave.
From the south (LA) - Take 101 north, exit at California Street. Turn right on California at end of off-ramp. Go straight through Thompson and turn left at Main Street. The mission is on right about four blocks ahead.
If from Main Street you go to Palm, turn on to Palm toward the small hot dog stand. Then at the first alley, turn left and park on the right hand lot near the Holy Cross School auditorium. The auditorium itself is the large building up the hill on the right.
From Brooks Ventura campus - Take 33 South, take the Main Street exit. Go right off the exit ramp. Go left on Main Street. The mission on left past Ventura Ave.
