Canon Sweetens The Pot
Monthly Clip Contest offers second and third-place prizes in addition to the grand-prize Mark II N.
By Scarlet Pruitt, SportsShooter.com
MAY 3, 2006 – Donald Miralle knows how to grab the eyes and votes of SportsShooter.com members. For the second year in a row the Getty Images photographer has snapped up SportsShooter.com's Photographer Of The Year award and has been presented a Canon EOS-1D Mark II N as his prize.
"I'm pretty happy, especially about the Mark II N," Miralle said Thursday, while caught en route to yet another assignment.
The prize, a high-end digital camera worth nearly $4,000, is provided by contest sponsor Canon USA, Inc. What's more, Canon has agreed to sponsor the SportsShooter.com "Clip Contest" for the third year in a row.
"We are excited to be able to continue to work with everyone at SportsShooter.com. We think it's a great site and we're proud to be associated with it," said Canon Director and Assistant General Manager David Metz.
The "Clip Contest" is a yearlong series of monthly contests in which photographers submit their best photos from the previous month to be rated by fellow SportsShooter.com members.
Each month points are awarded to the highest scoring images in four categories: Sports Action, Sports Feature, News, and Feature.
At the end of the year all the points are tallied and the member with the highest score is declared SportsShooter.com's Photographer Of The Year.
The contest is unique in that it is a peer-judged, said Canon's Metz. "Most contests have an appointed panel of experts but this is grassroots," he added.
According to Miralle, the peer aspect of the "Clip Contest" has motivated him.
"It makes me try for better photos," he said. "Also, it's pretty slick how they do it online. If I'm outside the country or on assignment I can still share my images."
Miralle admitted that Canon's Mark II N prize is also a big motivator, and SportsShooter.com Executive Producer Grover Sanschagrin seemed to understand.
"What other contest is able to reward its winner with a top-of-the-line professional digital camera like this? Canon's unwavering support of the SportsShooter.com community makes this possible," Sanschagrin said.
The Canon EOS-1D Mark II N is an 8.2-megapixel camera that shoots 8.5 frames per second. It offers a number of enhancements from the previous version, including a larger LCD screen.
While Miralle's arresting photos seem to have struck a chord with "Clip Contest" voters, members shouldn't be discouraged by his winning streak, especially since they will have even more chances to win this year.
Canon has announced that it is sweetening the pot for 2006 by offering second and third-place prizes, in addition to the EOS Mark II N it's giving to the grand-prize winner.
The second-place winner will receive Canon's new ImagePrograf IPF5000 large format pigment printer, offering a broad color range for photo printing, and the third-place contestant will take home a Canon EOS 30D digital camera, valued at around $1,400.
Canon is also continuing to supply the contents of the "Goodie Box", a package of Canon goodies to each winner of SportsShooter's monthly "Shooter's Choice" award.
"These new prizes represent a way for us to continue to give back to the sports photography community," Metz said.
With so many prizes on the table, SportsShooter.com members have a lot to shoot for this year.
