Kitagaki and Becherer Headline Brooks Speakers Program for March & April 2006
SportsShooter.com members Paul Kitagaki and Max Becherer to speak in Ventura

To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.
These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.
Please read carefully to see at which of several locations these presentations will be made. Many are held off-campus. (See directions below.)

Sacramento Bee Photojournalism: A Great Paper, a Great Photo Team
Journalism insiders know the Sacramento Bee is a great newspaper for photojournalists. The husband and wife team Renee Byer and Paul Kitagaki are staff photographers at the Bee. Renee recently was recognized for her project on biotechnology titled "Seeds of Doubt." Both she and Paul have done a mix of projects and single picture assignments at a variety of newspapers around the country.

As a staff photographer at the Washington Post, Michael Robinson-Chavez has covered a variety of international news. His presentation will cover how to pursue photographic projects and what the future may hold for global and in depth photographic reportage.

The Realities of Freelancing in Iraq: Car Bombs, Funerals, Real People
Recently freelancer Max Becherer has worked regularly for the New York Times in Iraq. His stories on U.S. soldiers and the medical care they receive when injured have played prominently in the times and recently in Men's Health magazine. His cover photo for TIME magazine showed Marines in battle during the siege of Faluja. Becherer will talk about his experiences and how he got to Baghdad from Bakersfield.
Holy Cross School - at the Ventura Mission - downtown Ventura, 211 E. Main St.
From the north (Santa Barbara) - Take 101 south, exit Main Street. Turn right off off-ramp. The mission is on left past Ventura Ave.
From the south (LA) - Take 101 north, exit at California Street. Turn right on California at end of off-ramp. Go straight through Thompson and turn left at Main Street. The mission is on right about four blocks ahead.
If from Main Street you go to Palm, turn on to Palm toward the small hot dog stand. Then at the first alley, turn left and park on the right hand lot near the Holy Cross School auditorium. The auditorium itself is the large building up the hill on the right.
From Brooks Ventura campus - Take 33 South, take the Main Street exit. Go right off the exit ramp. Go left on Main Street. The mission on left past Ventura Ave.
Poinsettia Pavilion - 3451 Foothill Road, Ventura, Calif.
From the North - From the Santa Barbara area take Highway 101 to the Seaward Avenue exit, turn left on E. Harbor Blvd, turn left on So. Seaward, and travel about one mile. At Poli St (to the left) and Foothill Road (to the right) turn right and follow Foothill Road for approximately one mile. Turn left at 3451 Foothill Road up the hill into the parking lot of the Poinsettia Pavilion.
From the South - From Los Angeles take Highway 101 to the Seaward Ave. exit, turn right on Seaward and travel about one mile. At Poli St (to the left) and Foothill Road (to the right) turn right and follow Foothill Road for approximately one mile. Turn left at 3451 Foothill Road up the hill into the parking lot of the Poinsettia Pavilion.
