Damon Winter, a staff photographer with the Los Angeles Times and one of the most creative portrait shooters working in newspapers, has been added to the faculty of the upcoming Sports Shooter Commuter Short Course.

Winter will be leading two breakout sessions on portrait photography, discussing not just lighting techniques but also the creative end of coming up with ideas and working with subjects to produce visually interesting and story-telling images.

The Commuter Short Course will be held Nov. 4 - 5, 2005 in Ventura, California at Brooks Institute of Photography and at the Holiday Inn Hotel. The educational event features several main speakers and six different breakout classes.

"Having Damon join our faculty is a huge plus. I had been trying to sign him up for several weeks," said Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter founder and organizer of the November event.

"I've admired his portrait work in the Times since he joined their staff last year. His work is not just creative but encompasses many different styles, utilizing many different lighting techniques that are usually seen in magazine work and in art galleries," Hanashiro added.

The Sports Shooter Commuter Short Course filled all 230 seats in less than two weeks and currently is not accepting any further registration pending any cancellations.

Winter previously worked at the Dallas Morning News before coming west to join the LA Times staff in 2004. Also on the faculty is 2005 Pulitzer Prize winner Deanne Fitzmaurice of the San Francisco Chronicle, USA TODAY's Jack Gruber and Chronicle picture editor Kathleen Hennessy. Breakout instructors include: Rod Mar (Seattle Times), Donald Miralle (Getty Images), Wally Skalij (LA Times), Chip Litherland (Sarasota Herald-Tribune), Rick Rickman (Brooks Institute of Photography) and the staff of the Ventura Star.

The Commuter Short Course was made possible by the involvement of Canon, Nikon and Brooks Institute of Photography.
