Brooks Institute announces speakers program for July & August, 2005

To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.

These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.

Please read carefully to see at which of several locations these presentations will be made. Many are held off-campus. (See directions below.)

Brooks Institute of Photography Visual Journalism Speakers Program - July - August 2005


Speaker #1 - Wednesday, July 20, 2005
Ventura College Theater, 4667 Telegraph Road, Ventura, Calif. 93003, 8 pm

"On the Road to Faluja" - Listening to the People of Iraq

Independent documentary filmmaker Mark Manning has recently returned from Iraq. His goal was to speak to the ordinary people of Iraq about the conduct of the war. In making his film, "On the Road to Faluja" Manning saw an opportunity to listen to the people affected the most in this conflict. In 2003 Manning traveled the U.S. to conduct similar interviews with citizens of this country. He will explain his discoveries in the course of making films about these experiences.


Speaker #2 - Wednesday, August 3, 2005
Holy Cross School, Ventura Mission, 211 E. Main St., Ventura, Calif., 8 pm

Tricks of the trade - 30 years working with the best in photojournalism

Karen Mullarkey has worked in photojournalism at many of the leading magazines in this country. Among them are LIFE, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, New York Magazine and Sports Illustrated. In each case she has been a major newsroom voice in the acquisition and display of pictures for these publications. Recently she joined the America 24/7 team as assignment director for the project's national book and later became the director of photography for the 50 state books.


Speaker #3 - Wednesday, August 17, 2005
Holy Cross School, Ventura Mission, 211 E. Main St., Ventura, Calif., 8 pm

It's All Storytelling: Photojournalism, Filmmaking, Series Television

Ken Kwok started as a newspaper photographer. He shared a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize while as staff photographer at he Long Beach Press Telegram. In a career change Kwok attended the USC film school. (He made money on the side shooting Red Carpet events for Hollywood.com and Sipa Press.) Now he is pursuing a career writing for film and television, including Nickelodeon and the Fox network action drama, "Johnny Zero." In his presentation he will talk about the path of possibilities open to visual storytellers.

Ventura College Theater - Ventura College, 4667 Telegraph Road, Ventura, CA 93003

Take Highway 101 to Ventura . Then take Highway126 east toward Santa Paula. Take the Victoria Ave. exit and turn left onto Victoria Ave. Turn left on Loma Vista Rd. The campus will be on the left-hand side just beyond Day Road. The theater is along Loma Vista about half way down the campus block. Park on Loma Vista or the surrounding streets for free. If you park on campus, you'll need to purchase a day parking permit from bright yellow machines.


Holy Cross School - at the Ventura Mission - downtown Ventura, 211 E. Main St.

From the north (Santa Barbara) - Take 101 south, exit Main Street. Turn right off off-ramp. The mission is on left past Ventura Ave.

From the south (LA) - Take 101 north, exit at California Street. Turn right on California at end of off-ramp. Go straight through Thompson and turn left at Main Street. The mission is on right about four blocks ahead.

If from Main Street you go to Palm, turn on to Palm toward the small hot dog stand. Then at the first alley, turn left and park on the right hand lot near the Holy Cross School auditorium. The auditorium itself is the large building up the hill on the right.

From Brooks Ventura campus - Take 33 South, take the Main Street exit. Go right off the exit ramp. Go left on Main Street. The mission on left past Ventura Ave.
