What are the best sports photographs of 2004?
You can find out in person Friday April 8, 2005 when the Sports Shooter Annual Contest is judged in Southern California.
"The finals of the contest will again be open to the public to observe," said Sports Shooter founder Robert Hanashiro, "This is a great opportunity for people to not only see the year's great sports photographs but also hear the comments, discussions and jabs the judging panel make while deciding the winners in each of the four categories and selecting the best photo overall."
This year's judging panel includes: Peter Read Miller of Sports Illustrated, Wally Skalij of the Los Angeles Times, Southern California freelance photographer Matt Brown, Nikon Professional Services' Ronal Taniwaki and freelance photographer Rick Rickman.
The judging panel will spend the day looking over entries and paring each category down to 20 photographs that will be judged during the finals. The evening's open judging session will determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the four categories also the Photo of the Year will be selected from the winners of these categories.
"Everyone seems to want to cover professional and major college sports," Hanashiro said "The SportsShooter.com message board seems to always have a thread about that. But last year proved that a compelling, award-winning photography can be made at any sport at any level."

Last year's big winner was a photography by Melissa Lyttle taken at the Little League World Series.
"The debate among the judges is always lively and very enlightening. I think the people in attendance learned a lot about photography during the open judging session last year. If I were a student I wouldn't want to miss Peter and Wally debating about cropping!" Hanashiro added.
This year's Sports Shooter Annual Contest is being sponsored by Samy's Camera, Lightware, Lowpro, AquaTech, Think Tank Photo and Nikon.
Nikon's Southern California offices are located at 19601 Hamilton Avenue in Torrance, CA, near the 110 / Harbor Freeway and the 405 / San Diego Freeway. The open judging session will begin promptly at 7:30pm.
Los Angeles Times staff photographer Myung J. Chun and Brooks Institute of Photography student Max Morse will be assisting with the logistics and video production involved with the contest judging.
"We opened the finals to the public to watch a few years ago because we realized it was a wonderful educational opportunity," Hanashiro said, "We always have a fabulous group of judges and I felt that it would be great for them to not only decide what the best of this contest is but also to share their thoughts and insights about the entries --- and this profession --- with a big crowd. Plus it's just plain fun!"
