Sports Shooter Academy FAQ
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter

Wally Skalij of the Los Angeles Times will be on the Sports Shooter Academy faculty.

A few questions have come up regarding the upcoming Sports Shooter Academy, so here is a brief Sports Shooter Academy FAQ:
Question: What is the deadline for applications?
Answer: The deadline is actually whenever we fill the last slot in the workshop. Currently I am planning on just 25 spots in this first Sports Shooter Academy. At present, I have sent out over 160 application forms. Obviously not everyone will decide to apply. However, 25 is not a lot of spots. So if you do want to attend, it would be better to get your portfolio together and submit your application sooner rather than later. As Mongo Johnson would say "If you snooze, you loose. Big - time!"
Question: I don't have 20 decent sports photos to make up a portfolio to apply to Sports Shooter Academy with. What should I do?
Answer: You do not have to submit an all sports portfolio. What the portfolio is intended to do is give the faculty an opportunity to see what skills you have, what areas we might concentrate on during the weekend and whether this workshop would be good fit for you. This is not a workshop for the beginner, but it is not for the seasoned sports shooter veteran either. What this weekend is for is to provide guidance, tips, critiques, inspiration and evaluation in an atmosphere of comradery. Everyone will be working in teams and we will all be contributing to the whole education process during the course of the workshop.
Question: Is this a "replacement" for The Luau?
Answer: No.
Question: Do we have to wear those silly Hawaiian print shirts like we do at The Luau?
Answer: No. BUT if you want to get in good with The Kahuna and the rest of the faculty it might be a good idea.
Question: What sports might we be covering at Sports Shooter Academy?
Answer: Men's and women's basketball. Baseball. Softball. Men's volleyball. And possibly women's water polo, tennis and track & field. Timing and the event schedules will determine whether we can fit in these other sports.
Question: I see Wally Skalij is on the faculty. Will he talk about the news and feature documentary work he does for the Los Angeles Times?
Answer: Good question. There will be plenty of time in the mornings and late evenings for participants to discuss photography of all kinds with the faculty and staff, either one-on-one or in small groups. While this is a sports photography workshop, the faculty is composed of outstanding photographers who work in all styles and types of photography. My hope is that this workshop will be a great place for participants and faculty to learn and grow together in a relaxed atmosphere.
Question: From this list of sports movies, which is the best of all-time?
"Tin Cup"
"The Longest Yard"
"Slap Shot"
"The Natural"
"Bull Durham"
Answer: That's easy ... "Slap Shot" without a doubt. Maybe we will have a "Late Nite Sports Movie Marathon" with pizza if we can fit it into the busy schedule. It would be fun to hang out together after a long day of shooting and editing sports.
