Brooks Institute announces speakers program for November & December, 2004

To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.

These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.

Please read carefully to see at which of several locations these presentations will be made. Many are held off-campus. (See directions below.)

Brooks Institute of Photography Visual Journalism Speakers Program: November-December, 2004

Speaker #1 - Wednesday, November 10, 2004
Poinsettia Pavilion, 3451 Foothill Road, Ventura, Calif., 6:30 pm - 9 pm

Adventure Photography: Good Pictures, Successful Business
Dan and Janine Patitucci graduated from Brooks Institute and immediately started working in outdoor and adventure photography --- successfully. Their journey continues as they regularly get work in both the editorial AND advertising worlds. This is a chance to hear How to Get Things Right in a freelance photography career.


Speaker #2 - Wednesday, November 17, 2004
Holy Cross School, Ventura Mission, 211 E. Main St., Ventura, Calif., 6:30 pm - 9 pm

Pat Tehan: One of Journalism's Best
As one of the best all-around journalist photographers in the country, Pat Tehan continues to display excellent work in the San Jose Mercury News. His work as a photographer in Pittsburg ranked him as a key member of one the strongest photography staffs in the country. He photo essay on surfing in Santa Cruz gave readers of the Mercury News Sunday magazine a new insight into the sport.


Speaker #3 - Wednesday, December 8, 2004
Screening Room, Brooks Ventura Campus, 5301 No. Ventura Ave., Ventura, Calif., 6:30 pm - 9 pm

World Press Photo Award Winner Jean-Marc Bouju
Currently based in Los Angeles as a staff photographer for the Associated Press, Jean-Marc Bouju has worked in many foreign countries. He recently won the top award in the World Press Photo competition with a picture made of a detained father and his son in Iraq. Earlier Bouju was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for his participation in the coverage of the embassy bombings in East Africa. In other foreign assignments Bouju has been based in Ivory Coast and Nicaragua.

Poinsettia Pavilion - 3451 Foothill Road, Ventura, Calif.

From the North - From the Santa Barbara area take Highway 101 to the Seaward Avenue exit, turn left on E. Harbor Blvd, turn left on So. Seaward, and travel about one mile. At Poli St (to the left) and Foothill Road (to the right) turn right and follow Foothill Road for approximately one mile. Turn left at 3451 Foothill Road up the hill into the parking lot of the Poinsettia Pavilion.

From the South - From Los Angeles take Highway 101 to the Seaward Ave. exit, turn right on Seaward and travel about one mile. At Poli St (to the left) and Foothill Road (to the right) turn right and follow Foothill Road for approximately one mile. Turn left at 3451 Foothill Road up the hill into the parking lot of the Poinsettia Pavilion.


Holy Cross School - at the Ventura Mission - downtown Ventura, 211 E. Main St.

From the north (Santa Barbara) - Take 101 south, exit Main Street. Turn right off off-ramp. The mission is on left past Ventura Ave.

From the south (LA) - Take 101 north, exit at California Street. Turn right on California at end of off-ramp. Go straight through Thompson and turn left at Main Street. The mission is on right about four blocks ahead

From Brooks Ventura campus - Take 33 South, take the Main Street exit. Go right off the exit ramp. Go left on Main Street. The mission on left past Ventura Ave.


Directions to Brooks Institute of Photography - Ventura Campus

From the North (San Francisco, Santa Barbara and such) - Take Highway 101 past Santa Barbara toward Ventura. Ventura is approximately 30 minutes (and 30 miles) south of Santa Barbara. As you approach Ventura, look for an exit marked for highway 33 and Ojai. Take that exit. This will put you on highway 33 going north toward Ojai. After several miles you will come to the Canada Larga exit. Take that exit. At the stop sign after leaving the freeway, turn left. This will take you under the freeway to another stop sign. Turn left again. Almost immediately you will see the Brooks Institute of Photography Ventura Campus off on your right. Park in the back of the campus. As you walk toward the campus buildings, past the pool and fountain, the Visual Journalism offices are in the A-1 wing on the right. If you walk straight ahead into the building you will get to the receptionist's desk.
