Nikon will again be sponsoring the Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau Student Shoot Out.
Twenty students will compete for the chance to win a Nikon D70 digital camera kit for their school.
On Saturday Nov. 6 the 20 students entered into the Shoot Out will have one hour to come up with a prize - winning photograph shot somewhere around the Redondo Beach Marina area, site of the Workshop & Luau 2004.
Only one photographer from each school can be entered into the Workshop & Luau / Nikon Shoot Out. It is up to each school to determine the photographer to represent them in the Shoot Out. There are students from nearly 40 different schools registered for this year's Workshop & Luau.
So schools that have several students attending: you should meet and decide who you want to represent your school. Please do not submit more than one student's name as your entrant into the Shoot Out.
There are only 20 spaces available, so the first 20 schools that register and submit the name of its representative will be allowed to participate. So please submit the name of just one student photographer to represent your school. (Obviously this student must be a registered and confirmed participant in the Workshop & Luau 2004.)
The camera, a CoolPix, will be supplied by Nikon, so everybody is on even ground equipment-wise. The assignment will be handed out when participants check in and pick up their cameras. Students will have one hour to shoot the assignment during the lunch break on Saturday Nov. 6.
"What we're attempting to do is give the participants a real world situation by giving them an assignment that could come from any daily newspaper," said Nikon's Ronal Taniwaki, "What the Shoot Out will do is show the participants what it's like to work under deadline pressure and produce a winning photo."
Judging for the Student Shoot Out will be Saturday evening Nov. 6 in an open session.
The Nikon D70 kit is made up of a D70 digital camera body and a Nikon 18-70mm AF-S DX zoom lens.
The D70 features the Nikon DX Format 6.1 effective megapixel resolution sensor combined with their renowned 5-area dynamic auto-focus system, 3 fps frame advance and a handy auto pop up flash. The 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED lens is optically designed for use with Nikon digital SLR sensors and has a 35mm equivalent of 27-105mm zoom range.
While this is a competition pitting 20 schools against each other, please keep in mind that this is a learning experience and while we want to see the best work possible, photographers should also try to have some fun!
Once a school decides its shooter to represent them, email the name of the school, the name of the student photographer, their email address and what year in school they are to: Nikonshootout@sportsshooter.com.
Remember, there are only 20 spaces available, so it's first come first served!

And speaking about contests ...

* Portfolios for non-students consist of a minimum of 12 photographs and a maximum of 15.
* Criteria for judging include: impact, diversity, technical skills and story-telling.
* The contest year runs from Oct. 2003 through Sept. 2004. All photographs must have been taken during this 12 - month period.

We recommend images be prepared in Adobe Photoshop. Images should be sized at 72 DPI with the largest dimension NO LARGER than 15 inches. Files should be saved as JPEGs at a quality setting of 8 (or medium). Check baseline optimized when saving if available.
File Name:
Decide on a unique photographer's code of 4 or 5 letters to be used to label each of your entries. EXAMPLE: bert01.jpg (bert = unique name; 01 = the number of the entry.)
Captions:
A complete caption is required for each entry. Your caption should include the location the photo was taken, the date it was shot, ID's and your byline. This information should be written in the "File Info" portion of the image in Photoshop.
EXAMPLE: Los Angeles, CA - 3/9/004 - Seattle Supersonic's forward Rashard Lewis throws down a slam dunk over Kobe Bryant during the first half of a 89 - 80 win at Staples Center. Photo by Rod Mar, The Seattle Times.
Burn your entry onto a CD. On the actual CD write your full name, the category (student or non-student), school or publication (if you are not on staff with a publication just write "freelance").
Send your CD entry to:
Luau Portfolio Contest

The Workshop & Luau Sports Portfolio Competition will be judged in an open session Friday evening. Several members of the faculty will be part of the judging panel and if you want to hear great discussion and debate over the entries, you will not want to miss this session. Barry Wong of the Seattle Times is the contest-judging chairman.
For those that want to enter this cool contest and for some CRAZY reason are not attending the Workshop & Luau ... they can enter for a $25 fee.
