Brooks Institute of Photography Visual Journalism Speakers Program - July-August, 2004
Speaker #1 - Wednesday, July 21, 2004
Holy Cross School, Ventura Mission, 211 E. Main St., Ventura, 6:30 pm - 9 pm
Oh, Those EDITORS! - The Wild Wacky World of Magazine Photography!
Photographer Tom Alleman is a self-taught photographer who has successfully migrated from the entry-level newspaper world to work for some of the largest magazines in our country. His clients include TIME, People, Smithsonian and many others. In addition, Alleman continues his work in the fine-art world.
On this occasion will do some serious truth telling about the magazine world: How gritty hard work is often the norm instead of the fantasy life of smooth sailing glory with full subject cooperation.
Speaker #2 - Wednesday, August 4, 2004
Holy Cross School, Ventura Mission, 211 E. Main St., Ventura, 6:30 pm - 9 pm
Just Great Pictures: Marilyn, the "Titanic" and More
Douglas Kirkland has had an amazing life in photography. As a young photographer he had a photo session with Marilyn Monroe. This lead him to LOOK and LIFE magazines and the opportunity to photograph many of the leading stars of the day: Nicole Kidman, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Robert De Niro, Elizabeth Taylor, Dustin Hoffman, Marlene Dietrich and Robert Redford. He has worked on the sets of more than 100 films.
Kirkland continues to be passionate about all kinds of photography. He is a regular teacher and coach for young photographers at the annual Eddie Adams Workshop for emerging young photojournalists.
Speaker #3 - Wednesday, August 18, 2004
Brooks Ventura campus, Screening Room - 6:30 pm - 9 pm
Balancing Art and Photojournalism
Los Angeles Times photographer Genaro Molina regularly creates photographs that make readers - and other photographers - sit up and take notice. His 2003 series black and white project on the homeless gave readers a look at a less glamorous side of Los Angeles. He recently traveled to Ireland for the anniversary of James Joyce's Ulysses, photographed AIDS in East Africa and the aftermath of the war in Bosnia.
In addition he has had his pictures exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute, at Fotofest in Houston and in museums in Los Angeles,
