Dave Black urged the students to break down the barriers and think outside the box.
Paul S. Clapp, Max Morse and 22 other SportsShooter.com members, including many students and instructors like Skip Dickstein, Dave Black, Rick Rickman, Bill Frakes and Joe McNally have decended upon Louisville, Kentucky for the start of the 2004 Collegiate Sports Journalism Seminar at Churchill Downs.

The planes have landed, the taxies have left, and the fifteen passenger vans are loaded and ready to go. They are filled with eager students, wanting to gain valuable knowledge from the professionals surrounding them.

On Thursday morning 20 of the best collegiate photographers, many of them sportsshooter.com members, embarked on a journey they will never forget - the 13th Annual Collegiate Sports Journalism Seminar at Churchill Downs.

Students gathered in the newly renovated "Learning center" in the backside of Churchill Downs, and were greeted by Skip Dickstein, (Seminar Director), and Mike Corrado (Assistant Director), who in turn introduced the faculty and staff of the seminar, which included Dave Black, Rick Rickman, Lucas Gilman, Joe McNally, Bill Frakes, and Louise Gaines.

Students then checked out camera gear donated by Nikon. Reps Carol Fisher and Bill Fourtney came loaded with full lines of equipment ranging from 14 mm's to 600 mm's and even a few D2H's for the students to try out over the weekend.

Jeff and David Snyder are also in the house from Penn Camera, along with other sponsors Bogen, Apple, Epson, Lexar, and Lowepro.

After lunch students split up into groups headed off to breakout sessions. Black shared his experiences of lighting with the students in the breakout he led, while Rickman took the students for a walk around the backside to discus story ideas.

Shortly after dinner, Black and Rickman continued the evening with inspirational talks.

Before starting, Black urged the students to break down the barriers and think outside the box. Then, he led by example with one of the most motivating speeches we have ever heard.

Lucas Gilman is ready for a fun weekend in Kentucky.
He gave examples of three venues he has worked at, and his experiences at each. He showed that a lot of kindness can you get very far in photography, as well as life. Just before the lights came up, a voice from the crowd stated what a lot of people were thinking: "You're incredible."

Corrado talked to Black after the presentation and noted that although this was around the 40th time he heard Black speak, this was by far the best.

Rickman followed Black with another inspirational talk showcasing his images from many of his long-term projects. His story on Navy Seals was a highlight of the show, and Rickman noted it to be his favorite story he has done.

In the ensuing days the students and staff will wander the grounds in search of that next great image. They will brave the weather (the forecast is calling for thunderstorms) and 5:00 a.m. wake up calls. They will be treated to lectures from the rest of the faculty, and will have the opportunity for critiques from the top pros in the industry.

So keep an eye out on SportsShooter.com, because the students and staff will be posting photos all weekend.
