John Burgess wins SFBAPPA Newspaper Photographer of the Year
San Jose State student Autmun Cruz claims top student prize

John Burgess shows off the trophy he wins by claiming the Ken McLaughlin Award as Newspaper Photographer of the Year at the 30th Annual SFBAPPA Newspaper Photography Competition's awards presentation.

A large gathering of local photojournalists gathered on Sunday night, April 4, 2004 at the Dean Lesher Regional Center in Walnut Creek, Calif. as the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association announced the winners of its 30th Annual Newspaper Photography Competition.
SportsShooter.com members John Burgess of The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa and Autumn Cruz of San Jose State University led the way by winning the overall professional and student titles. This is the first time Burgess has claimed the Bay Area's top award handed out to photojournalists
This year's event, emceed by KPIX-CBS 5 and KCBS radio personality Mike Sugarman, marked the first time the awards were handed out at the new venue in Walnut Creek. The annual event was combined with the California Press Photographer's Association's Gold Seal Awards presentations for the first time.
A total of 15 different SportsShooter.com members won awards this year and many other members were in attendance to swap stories, enjoy a few drinks and support their friends who brought home some lumber. Former Oakland Tribune staffer and SportsShooter.com member John J. Kim came in all the way from his new job at the Chicago Sun-Times to attend the event.
