Brooks Institute announces speakers program for March & April, 2004

To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.

These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.

For the March - April, 2004 term, presentations will be off-campus in the greater Ventura area. Please read carefully. (See directions below.)

Visual Journalism Speakers Program – March - April, 2004

Triple Play: A Trio National Geographic Photographers

Speaker #1 – Wednesday, March 17, 2004 – Fubarco Productions, 1813 Eastman Avenue, Ventura – 6:30 pm – 9 pm

Evolution of Vision and Vocation

Miguel Fairbanks has worked as a freelance photographer for National Geographic since he won the Hearst Photojournalism Competition in college. His picture of kids "train surfing" in Brazil won a first place in the World Press Photo competition. His book, "Thunder in the Hills-Sturgis at 50" covered the annual rally of Harley Davidson owners. His work has appeared in many publications including COLORS, Rolling Stone, GEO, Paris Match, Smithsonian, Sports Illustrated and The New York Times Magazine.

Making Pictures Out on the Road

Gerd Ludwig's book "Broken Empire: After the Fall of the USSR," published by National Geographic, was a 10-year retrospective on one of the most powerful nations in the world. During his career Ludwig has traveled to 70 countries, has been published in National Geographic, GEO, TIME, LIFE, Stern and several of the Day in the Life books. Early in his career he supported himself working as a bricklayer, sailor, gardener and dishwasher. Mr. Ludwig’s visit is made possible through the generous cooperation of Canon, USA.


Speaker #3 – Monday, April 12, 2004 – UCSB Campbell Hall – 8 pm

Live at National Geographic: Michael ("Nick") Nichols

Michael (Nick) Nichols concentrates on covering wildlife and ecosystems for National Geographic. He has worked with Jane Goodall covering chimpanzees and has completed a project on the endangered tigers. Nichols’ pictures have been used by environmental groups in the fight to preserve vanishing habitats and creatures. In 1999 Nichols accompanied anthropologist Michael Fay on a 2000-mile walk across the heart of Africa.

Special Event: Baron Wolman, Rollling Stone Magazine's First Photographer

Thursday, April 22, 2004 - Holy Cross School, Ventura Mission, 211 E. Main St., Ventura, 6:30 pm – 9 pm

Baron Wolman, the first-ever photographer to work for Rolling Stone Magazine will show his work from a classic era in rock and roll history. See a preview of his photography at http://www.fotobaron.com/.

From the north (Santa Barbara) – Take 101 South, exit at Telephone Road. Turn left onto Main Street. Turn right onto Telephone Roads. Turn left onto Market Street, Turn right onto Eastman Avenue. Make an immediate right into a building complex/industrial park. Fubarco is BEHIND the visible buildings. Veer to the left. Fubarco is on the right.

From the south (Los Angeles) – take 101 North, exit on Victoria. Go left under freeway. Turn right onto Valentine, which changes into Market Street. Turn left onto Eastman Avenue. Make an immediate right into a building complex/industrial park. Fubarco is BEHIND the visible buildings. Veer to the left. Fubarco is on the right.


Holy Cross School – at the Ventura Mission – downtown Ventura, 211 E. Main St.

From the north (Santa Barbara), Take 101 south, exit Main Street. Turn right off off-ramp. The mission is on left past Ventura Ave.

From the south (LA), take 101 north, exit at California Street. Turn right on California at end of off-ramp. Go straight through Thompson and turn left at Main Street. The mission is on right about four blocks ahead.

From Brooks Ventura campus, Take 33 South take the Main Street exit. Go right off the exit ramp. Go left on Main Street. The mission on left past Ventura Ave.

Note: Go to the mission e-a-r-l-y. You will need time to find parking in downtown Ventura.
