Sports Shooter Annual Contest judge Robert Beck of Sports Illustrated is always willing to share, as he proves by offering up part of his halftime hot dog at Candlestick Park in 2003.
The judging for the Sports Shooter Annual Contest will be held at Nikon's Torrance, Calif. office on Friday March 26, 2004.

The finals of this year's judging will be open for Sports Shooter Newsletter subscribers and members of SportsShooter.com. The finals will take place at 7:30 pm and will last approximately 2 hours. At the end of the judging, observers will have the opportunity to ask the judging panel questions.

This year's judging panel will be comprised of:

* Wally Skalij, award - winning photojournalist with the Los Angeles Times.
* Robert Beck, photography philosopher, surfer and staff photographer with Sports
Illustrated
.
* Peter Read Miller, staff photographer with Sports Illustrated.
* Brad Mangin, Bay Area freelance sports photographer
* Ronal Taniwaki, Nikon Professional Services Branch Manager

Robert Hanashiro, staff photographer with USA TODAY and founder of Sports Shooter, will moderate the judging and attempt to keep Beck and Taniwaki in line.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the Sports Shooter Community to gather and see some great photography and hear the opinions, critiques and praises by some of the top shooters working today," Hanashiro said. "If I were a student or someone who wants to learn what great sports photography is all about, I'd be there to observe on March 26."

If you are a subscriber to the Sports Shooter Newsletter or a member of SportsShooter.com and want to attend the open judging session, email to make a reservation with your name, occupation /or year in school, whether you like or dislike avocados and what you hope to learn during the evening: bert@sportsshooter.com.

"While judging the Picture of the Year contest in Missouri last month, I was amazed at all of the great things that could be learned from listening to the judges' comments and watching the debates unfold over the photographs we were looking at," Hanashiro said. "Looking at great photography is always inspiring."
