Annual Sports Shooter Contest FAQ
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter

Several questions (mostly from people that didn't RTFM!) have come my way concerning the Annual Sports Shooter Contest.

"I have a bunch of hockey (or auto racing, skakeboarding, surfing, biking, swimming, dog Frisbee ... whatever!) photos I want to enter. Do I enter them in "No Ball" or "Action"?

People ... you are thinking too literal here! Enter your photographs in whatever category you think it will do the best in. A great auto racing photo could very well in the "Action" category (but I doubt it). As I suggested in the contest rules, look over the winners in previous year's contest to see what the judges have awarded.

Also note that 1) Generally the "No Ball" category was been a sport feature one; 2) High-impact action is always the criteria for judges in the "Action" category (a receiver SIMPLY running down the field with the ball better be NAKED or have something else that separates it from the hundreds of other images) and 3) "No College No Pro" means NO professional sports and NO major college sports. This is an area for prep, recreational sports leagues, Little League etc. But also note that just because it's a photograph of a Little Leaguer ... it still has to be a GREAT photograph to win.

"Can you please confirm that you received my entries?"

I have average about 60 - 75 entries a day the past couple of days. Since I am on the road in Houston on assignment, there is no way that can confirm to each and every one of the entries (or respond to all of these emails). You will have to take it on faith that the Internet (and your email client) hooked you up with the Might Sports Shooter Email Server and delivered your entries to me.

"What happened to the College Sports Portfolio category?"

I now hold a Sports Portfolio (for students AND pros) held in conjunction with the Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau.

"I'm a member of SportsShooter.com so that makes me eligible for this contest right?"

WRONG. As it says, you have to be a subscriber to the monthly Sports Shooter Newsletter. To subscribe, go to SportsShooter.com and click on "Subscribe".

"I thought I was a subscriber to the newsletter, but I don't seem to get it."

Each month I get back about 120 - 150 emails from servers that filter out the newsletter to people who have subscribed for various reasons. Lately with the increase amount of SPAMMING and viruses going on, ISPs (and especially corporate email servers) have been kicking back emails it automatically thinks are bad. When I receive either a bad email or one that is returned THREE TIMES, it is deleted from the subscription list. Your name is still listed as a subscriber in my database, but you don't receive the newsletter because it simply won't go through.

ALSO ... those of you that us a free web - based email service (like Yahoo and mail.com), often its SPAM filtering features prevent the monthly newsletter from being delivered to you.

"I made my entries larger so they look better when they are projected. Is that OK?"

Files that are significantly larger that the specs laid out in the contest rules will be deleted. The specs we have set if followed correctly and you don't "over - Photoshop" your images should be look great when projected for the contest. Nikon, the host of the judging, provides us with a state-of-the-art projector.

NOTE: The judging has been pushed back to April 10. Details on location and time of the open session where you can watch the finals will be announced next month.

Thanks ... and good luck!
