Brooks Institute announces speakers program for January & February
Dai Sugano, Annie Wells and Kevin Gilbert to visit Ventura
By Jim McNay, Brooks Institute of Photography
To all: Here are the speakers scheduled to make presentations for the Visual Journalism program this term at Brooks Institute.
These sessions are free (unless otherwise noted) and are open to all interested parties. Please feel free to drop in and visit if you are anywhere near the California central coast. The Ventura campus is only 60-minutes north of Los Angeles.
For the January-February, 2004 term, presentations will be off campus in the greater Ventura area. Please read carefully. (See directions below.)
Visual Journalism Speakers Program – January-February, 2004
Speaker #1 – Wednesday, January 21, 2004 – Buena High School Little Theater, Ventura
(Not) Lost in Translation: Young Tiger in the Journalism Jungle
Immediately after graduation Dai Sugano won his way onto the photography staff of a major newspaper, the San Jose Mercury News. He worked hard to Do Things Right while in college—including getting internships and winning the College Photographer of the Year competition. He recently spent several weeks on a special project covering the California governor’s re-call election.
Speaker #2 – Wednesday, February 4, 2004 – Holy Cross School (at the Ventura Mission on Main Street, Ventura).
Life is Fired at Us Point-Blank
Annie Wells, a Los Angeles Times staff photographer, recently faced the most challenging “assignment” of her life—surviving a bout with cancer. She gave herself as assignment to cover her treatment and recovery in photographs. She will talk about her most recent life journey.
She will also talk about winning the Pulitzer Prize for pictures from a river rescue in greater Santa Rosa, Ca.
Speaker #3 – Wednesday, February 18, 2004 – Holy Cross School (at the Ventura Mission on Main Street, Ventura).
Ten careers in 20 years
Kevin Gilbert is a Washington, DC-based photographer with a varied career. He has worked at newspapers (including the Washington Times in DC), covered the Eco-Challenge races, worked with the Discovery Channel and helps run Blue Pixel, a digital photography consulting business. He is also a former multi-term president of the White House News Photographers Association.
These presentations are free and run from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 9 p.m. All are welcome.
