ALOHA!
I have some great news for Workshop & Luau participants wanting to show the world they are THE top Sports Shooter of the year. And we promise to really name a winner!
Nikon has confirmed they will be providing a fabulous CoolPix 5400 for the winner of the professional category of the mail-in Workshop & Luau 2003 SPORTS PORTFOLIO COMPETITION.
And Mamiya America has confirmed they will be providing a set of MultiMax radio remote transceivers for the winner of the student category.
Wow!

I also wanted to announce the judging panel for the Sports Portfolio Competition. The contest coordinator is Barry Wong of the Seattle Times. WORKSHOP & LUAU MAIL-IN SPORTS PORTFOLIO CONTEST
There have been many questions about the Workshop & Luau Sports Portfolio Contest I recently announced. So here are the details:
The contest is sponsored by Nikon.
This contest is open to registered (and attending) participants only. In other words: you must be present at the Workshop & Luau Nov. 7 - 8 to win.
The contest "year" will be Oct. 1, 2002 to Sept. 30, 2003. All images submitted in your portfolio entry must have been taken during those dates.
Judging criteria will be based on diversity; impact of individual photos; overall appeal of the images collectively; and technical stills.
How to submit your entry:
All entries will be submitted on CD.
There are two categories: student and non-student.
A student portfolio must have a minimum of 8 photographs and no more than 12.
A pro (non-student) portfolio must have a minimum of 15 photographs and no more than 20.
Sports action, sports features and sports-related portraits all qualify for inclusion in a sports portfolio. A picture story can also be included, but be mindful of the limit of photos in a portfolio.
Image Preparation
Size:
We recommend all images be prepared in Adobe Photoshop. Images should be sized at 72 DPI with the largest dimension no larger than 12 inches. Files should be saved as JEPGs at a quality setting of 7 (or medium). Check baseline optimized when saving if available.
Naming Your Files:
The first letter of your file name should either be "P" (for pros or non-students) or "S" (for students). Next decide on a unique photographer's code of 4 or 5 letters to be used to label each of your entries. Follow that with the number of your entry and the total number of photos in your portfolio ...1of15; 2of15; 3of15 and so forth. And last, the file extension: .jpg.
FILE NAME EXAMPLE:
pbert1of15.jpg
Caption:
A complete caption is required for each entry. Your caption should include the location the photo was taken, the date it was shot, ID's and a brief description. This information should be written in the caption field of the "File Info" area of the image in Photoshop.
EXAMPLE:
Los Angeles, CA - 6/9/03 - Los Angeles Lakers' center Shaquille O'Neal throws down a slam dunk over Washington's Michael Jordan in the first half at Staples Center.
Also in the "Caption Writer" field in Photoshop's File Info, type in your name and e-mail address. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
On the CD itself, write your first and last name, who you work for or your school (if you are a freelance photographer, just write in "freelance") and whether you are a student or non-student and
EXAMPLE:
Rod Mar
Seattle Times
Non-Student
PLEASE CHECK YOUR ENTRIES before burning them onto a CD. Make sure you've followed the instructions on labeling your photographs. Once you've burned the CD, put it back into your computer and see if it shows up on your desktop. Failure to follow the rules and instructions will result in your entry being disqualified.
Mail your CD to:

The judging of the Workshop & Luau Sports Portfolio Contest will be Friday evening, Nov. 7 from 9 - 11pm. This will be an open session for Luau participants to observe.
The contest coordinator is Barry Wong from the Seattle Times and the judging panel will be chaired by Robert Deutsch from USA TODAY.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning portfolios in each category and will be provided by Nikon.
