Beneath the stunning autumn weather covering the gold and orange canopy of the Catskill Mountains, the Eddie Adams' Workshop XVI came to a close last night (Monday, October 13, 2003) with a student slide show and awards presentation.

The 100 students that comprised this year's "Barnstorm" were split into ten teams and assigned various topics to complete within two intense days of shooting and editing. Groups like the Green Team led by Bill Frakes and edited by Jimmy Colton challenged their students to capture "The Sporting Life," and the students responded with a range of interpretations that had one thing in common: excellent photography.

In between the hours of shooting and editing, we had the opportunity to listen to presentations made by some of the best in the business including ninety-two year old Joe Rosenthal (Marines Raising the Flag Over Iwo Jima), Nick Ut (Pulitzer Prize; naked girl running in Vietnam following a napalm attack), John White (Pulitzer Prize for documenting Chicago Life), Ruth Fremson (3 Pulitzer Prizes; NY Times), David Hume Kennerly (Pulitzer Prize), Douglas Kirkland (photojournalist and celebrity portraitist), and many other dominant and important photographers of the 20th and 21st century.

Although currently more famous for his "Burrito Video," SportsShooter.com correspondent and student from the Brooks Institute of Photography, Max Morse won an assignment from Reuters for his work documenting a dilapidated old home for the Orange Team's "Our House" project. And SportsShooter.com member and NY Times freelancer Suzy Allman won a general assignment with Sports Illustrated for her work of a fly fisherman that included underwater shots taken with her Ewa-Marine bag. Despite her worst fears, Jimmy Colton assured me that she wouldn’t be shooting a 9-year old who scored the game winning goal playing AYSO soccer in Fresno for the "Faces in the Crowd" section. Even Brooks Professor Jim McNay won an Epson printer during a raffle for the "Black Team," which runs logistics during the conference.

There are few industries in the world where neophytes can rub shoulders with the people that made history by recording history with their cameras. There are few industries were genuine camaraderie is par for the course. Like our own Sports Shooter Luau, Eddie created his workshop so that the best can inspire the industry's present and future.

While Eddie danced the night away following the Workshop's finale, and I said my goodbyes to my team, I realized that I didn’t have to wish anyone good luck because their vision, talent, and hard work ensured that they would capture history in an extraordinary way one frame at a time.

Shoot Well.

The Eddie Adams Workshop is held annually in October and open to students and professionals with less than 3 years of experience. Applications are typically due in June.
