Taking Eddie's farm by storm

Editors note: Barstorm XVI, the 16th Annual Eddie Adams Workshop, got underway on Eddie's farm in Jeffersonville, New York on Friday, October 10, 2003. Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, Eddie Adams, presides over the intensive four-day program. Many SportsShooter.com members, including Max Morse from the Brooks Institute of Photography, are participating in this event. We asked Max to share some of his experiences.

Tonight (Friday, October 10, 2003) I met two of the greatest photography icons ever: Joe Rosenthal and Nick Ut. I, along with 99 other individuals (15 of which are SportsShooter.com members), have the privilege of meeting journalists such as these out here at the 16th Annual Eddie Adams Workshop.

After a couple sleepless nights in anticipation, I finally boarded the bus in Mid-town Manhattan en route to the Catskills of New York earlier today. Eddie’s famed farm was our destination, and black team member, and Brooks Institute of Photography Visual Journalism Department Head Jim McNay led us.

Once we reached the small town of Jeffersonville, we checked into the hotel, and quickly rushed over to the farm for our first introduction to Barnstorm XVI. I was lucky enough to have SportsShooter.com member Allen Murabayashi as one of my cohorts in the 10 person Orange Team. Allen immediately helped to release some of the anxiety surrounding the big event with his hollers of, "Orange Team!!!" and his classic Polaroid sticker-producing camera. At once, Allen and I changed our credential photos to look like orange team bandits, with the aid of our orange bandanas and the sticker camera.

After listening to some unbelievable speeches by top industry professionals, we all headed back to the hotels around 10:00 pm for our team meetings. The only problem was, Allen and I were starving. With only drive-thru’s open, we tried to walk through at Taco Bell and Wendy’s but we were denied service for our lack of car. The minutes until our meeting were ticking away, and we needed a plan fast.

Just then, we spotted SportsShooter.com member Suzy Allman, and Allen had an idea. Before I knew what was happening, I was in the driver’s seat of Suzy’s car while Allen and other SportsShooter.com member Jon Austria walked alongside, ordering away at the Taco Bell.

After we were well fed and our meeting was over, we all headed down to the bar to see who was there. It was then that Sports Illustrated staff photographer Bill Frakes pulled me aside and told me that I had to meet some people. Before my very eyes, he led me over to meet Ut, then Rosenthal. I got to mingle with a pair of photo icons.

As I am now sitting here in my room at 2:30 in the morning, I am realizing that I have to be up in 4 hours for another long day of speakers, panels, and shooting. One moment that I am sure will be a highlight will be the presentation by Sports Illustrated's Picture Editor Jimmy Colton and Director of Photography Steve Fine.
