2003 Luau: More details announced
Nikon announces clean and check clinic and Lexar Media is added to the trade show
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter
ALOHA!
It's been a while since I sent everyone a note. So I thought I'd bring you up to date on a couple of things going on with THE coolest photography event of the year and issue a couple of reminders:
- Nikon has confirmed that it will be holding an EQUIPMENT CLEAN & CHECK CLINIC during the Workshop & Luau Nov. 7 - 8 in Manhattan Beach. Got a D1H with a dirty CCD? Or a zoom lens missing a mount screw or two? This is the time to get them checked out for FREE! Workshop &
Luau participants will be able to get two pieces of Nikon equipment checked over by their technicians. Drop off will be Friday Nov. 7 beginning at 11 AM. The registration desk for the Workshop & Luau will also open at that time.
- LEXAR MEDIA is the latest company to confirm participation in the Workshop & Luau trade show. Lexar will be displaying and demonstrating its wide range of digital media cards, storage devices and card readers. Lexar joins Nikon, Mamiya, Hasselblad, Hoodman, Epson, Brooks Institute of Photography and Lightware in the Workshop & Luau trade show. The trade show will take place on both Friday and Saturday evenings in the Manhattan Beach Marriott main ballroom. For more information on Lexar's line of products, go to the web site at: http://www.digitalfilm.com/
- Sports Shooter columnist Mongo Johnson has updated his WORKSHOP & LUAU AREA DINING GUIDE. For a look at local restaurants from fast food to fine dining, check it out in the latest issue of the Sports Shooter Newsletter: http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1024

If you think you are as good of a sports shooter as workshop faculty member Bob Deutsch prove it by entering the sports portfolio contest.

- The deadline for the WORKSHOP & LUAU SPORTS PORTFOLIO CONTEST is approaching fast. If you think you're as good as Workshop & Luau faculty members Peter Read Miller, Rod Mar, Robert Seale, Bob Deutsch, Jack Gruber or Vincent Laforet ... here's your chance to prove it and show the world! The deadline for this mail-in sports portfolio competition is Oct. 27! This contest is divided into two categories: students and non-students. Judging will be in an open session on Friday Nov. 7. Prizes will be awarded to the winning portfolios and they will be shown during the final general session of The Luau on Saturday Nov. 8. For more details on entering the contest, check out the story here: http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1008
(P.S. --- We PROMISE to make an award in each category unlike an unnamed 4-Initial-Organization!)
- If you missed the announcement about the WORKSHOP & LUAU / NIKON STUDENT SHOOT OUT, you're already a little late ... but you can get on the waiting list. Nikon will be holding an on-the-spot "Shoot Out" for students on Saturday Nov. 8. The prize: A Nikon D100 for the winning student's school! The 20 slots in the Shoot Out have been filled. But Nikon is putting names on a waiting list in case one of the 20 schools is a no-show on Nov. 8. For details on the Shoot Out, check here: http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1032
Thanks to Ronal Taniwaki, Bill Pekala and Nikon for hosting and sponsoring this fabulous contest.
- A reminder on the ONE-ON-ONE PORTFOLIO REVIEW SESSIONS: Please bring a portfolio with no more than 20 images. Here is a reprint of the portfolio review guidelines that was included in your Luau confirmation:
"This has become an important part of the Workshop & Luau for many participants ... a time where you can show your work to the faculty and staff, get an evaluation of your photographs, network and ask advice. We have expanded this portion of the Workshop & Luau to BOTH Friday and Saturday nights, running from 9 pm through midnight.
If you want to have a one-on-one portfolio review, you should try to limit your work to 20 images (we'll let you slide on picture stories and count that as one!) and can bring either transparencies or prints. Have your portfolio organized in an orderly fashion and be prepared to answer questions about your work!
If you plan on showing a digital portfolio, you will have to provide your own laptop and appropriate software to review your work. You can have as many different people look over your work in either or both portfolio review sessions. We anticipate having 30 - 35 members of our faculty and staff, along with several local photographers and picture editors, available to look at portfolios.
If you're looking for an internship or trying to just get your foot in the door in photography, this could be your chance. The is also a great opportunity to make those important contacts within the industry."
- If you don't own one or two HAWAIIAN PRINT SHIRTS, better get shopping soon! We ask that every participant wear a Hawaiian shirt during the Workshop & Luau. If you haven't been to any of the previous Workshops & Luaus, this is what sets us apart from the others: We are about having some F-U-N! So please join us and go Hawaiian!
Here is a ss.com Message Board thread about Hawaiian print shirts:

->> We're hearing from all of our student members of SportsShooter.com ... how about all of you workin' people out there? We've announced the dates and location early so you can make plans, book flights and get that portfolio in order. We had over 200 students last year ... we'd like to see more "working pros" ...
So here's a little help for those of you that are "Hawaiian Print Shirt -Challenged" --- The Big Kahuna's Guide to Hawaiian Shirts to Wear at the Workshop & Luau 2003:

'Nuf Said!
- And lastly, we have now confirmed over 420 people for the Workshop & Luau 2003. This is over 100 more than attended last year! I will be closing off registration very soon because we are running out of space in our more popular breakout classes. If you have registered and not yet paid ... you WILL BE DROPPED if you exceed the 21-day payment period. If you are a student registered and do not really plan on attending, please notify me ASAP so I can allow someone else to take your spot. Registering and not paying (or students not showing up) just deprives a colleague an opportunity to benefit from THE coolest photography event of the year.
We have a great weekend planned. I will be sending out more information and reminders. The mail-in contest will be really cool ... so please look over your last 12 months of images and enter!
See you all Nov. 7 & 8 in Manhattan Beach. MAHALO!
